This is a question I've wondered about: what would the effect of a nuclear exchange be on Western politics (as opposed to the Warsaw Pact). Assuming different levels of carnage, but none so far as to the point where the national government loses *too* much control, what is more likely to happen as elections continue at their usual times (assuming they aren't canceled, which would obviously be a sign of governmental loss of control)?
Is the party currently in power going to experience a massive backlash for having allowed the nation to enter into a devastating nuclear war? Or is the party in power going to be almost unanimously re-elected in a "don't switch horses in the middle of a stream" moment? Or something else?
