Plausibility Check. Unifying US Special Forces.

Gone Fishin'
How plausible would it be to unify the US Rangers, Navy S.E.A.L.S, DELTA Forces and the Special Operation Forces, (Green Beret's) into a single entity.

I'm thinking it would allow a streamlining of assets to stop duplication of abilities and make them a "Jack of all trades"

I don't know what name they'd go by but I presume something like the US Commando's.

BONUS POINTS- If you can also do the same to the UK's S.A.S, S.B.S & the Para's Pathfinders.

Regards filers.

it is called 'the marines' & ' HM Royal Marines' :D
what would be the use of unifying, SOF are specialists, unifying would undermine their effectivity greatly

The British already unify their 'ninjas' into the UKSF this is SBS/SAS supported by 1st battalion the Parachute regiment which is tasked as a SF Support battalion.

SBS
SAS
SRR
Special Forces Support Group - namely 1st Battalion the Parachute regiment

This last unit was described as a 'Ranger' unit and fulfils the role as seen by the US Army Rangers in such missions as Operation Gothic Serpent in 1993 - where the Rangers provided the troops for the cordon and the SF soldiers carried out the actual raid or Operation Barras in 2000 (which resulted in the formation of the SFSG)

I think it makes a great deal of sense to align the various formations under a unified command with perhaps a standing Brigade sized Support group taking its personnel from the Rangers, US Marine Recon Battalions and USAF Special Operations Command.

Unlikely, the Services jealously guard all of their assets and SF are at a premium now. The closest we're likely to come is something like Joint Special Ops Cmd, but with stronger authority.

Yes, combining them might save some in logistics and supply. However, the counter argument is that each group has special expertise that would be lost or diluted if combined.

Probably the only way to get to a true unification is if Congress first decided to combine the services (somewhat akin to Canada) and then they, SECDEF, and the Service secretaries pushed hard to break down walls in the name of efficiency in the process. All that is, of course, extremely unlikely.

That's what JSOC is. When it comes to 'niche' functions like special forces, the armed forces of any country are a lot more integrated than neat lines on an organisational chart make it look.

...

These units have widely disparte missions. A superficial glance makes it look like they are all the same door kickers in different uniforms, but each does very different things. Consolidate them into a single unit & to accomplish the several missions it would have to be subdivided into several very different departments.

Thats about as far as is practical. Even then JSOC has created its own brand of inefficiencies, offsetting some of the advantages.
