Plausibility check: The Silbervogel

Near the end of World War II, the Germans had a huge number of futuristic and downright fanciful aircraft designs on the drawing board. One of the best known of these was the Silbervogel (Silver Bird), a suborbital bomber, a combination between a spaceship and a bomber. After the war, tests done in the US and France revealed that the Silbervogel, as concieved, would have burned up upon reentry into the atmosphere. Obviously, it was far out of reach during World War II and for a long time thereafter.

So I was wondering: would the Silbervogel be buildable even with current technology?

Given the appropraite resources and commitments to the project, a first rate power (read US and Russia, with the UK, France, and CHina as outside possibilities) should be able to build one with modern tech. I think this might violate some treaties on warfare in space, but not sure. As far as the Nazis building one, that pretty much impossible. Even a prototype which could approach design specs.

edit: for future reference, this topic goes in the Alternate History Discussion: After 1900 subforum.
