Plausibility Check: Restoration of French Monarchy in the 20th Century

Is it plausible for monarchy of some form to be restored to France after 1900? If so when, how, and would it be Orleanist, Legitimist, Bonapartist, or self proclaimed?

My opinion is that the most likely opportunity for a monarchical restoration would be in the wake of a German victory in WWI. The next most likely opportunity would be if the February 6 1934 crisis led to a coup d'etat. Though, I think a coup would more likely lead to an authoritarian dictatorship (probably para-fascist, not unlikely fully fascist) instead of a monarchy. However, such a authoritarian regime may seek legitimacy by restoring the monarchy.

Catastrophe needed

I'd expect that a restoration could only happen in the wake of something VERY, VERY major, and likely BAD. A defeat by teh Germans could spark such a restoration--or a monarchial Germany might install a pupet king.

Or, a pretender to the throne could rally the people in bad times, and get crowned afterwards.

If stability was needed--a change in government every few months, perhaps--then a monarch could be seen as a stabilizing factor--perhaps even being elected President, and going from there...

Isn't there a king of France anyway? As there would be some alive from one of the old families. He just hasn't been crowned.

take over France in the wake of a defeat in WW1 and restore the Orleanist monarchy.

Alternatively, Prince Napoleon, as well as Prince Murat, the heirs of both the Bonapartes and the Murats, were major figures in the French Resistance in WW2

Seeing as even capture of Paris in 1940, fall of Metropolitan France in 1942 and wholesale defeat of French armies and loss of colonial empire - all disasters of the first order, some coming in combination - never resulted in widespread call for restoring monarchy, I'll stick my neck out and say restoration of Monarchy in France is highly improbable if not impossible event. Puppet monarchy might make a possibility of legitimate one even more remote than it seems on first inspection.

From what I've read, A large number of French officers during WW1 were monarchists. If the French lose the war and the military is able to place the blame on the civilian government like the Germans did. It seems somewhat plausible that the military might try to restore the monarchy. Then again if they try there will be so much blood.

Not necessarily. The Third Republic was intended to be temporary, and while it's true that it became popular, I don't see that much conflict with a restoration, if one occurs.
