One thing that has always perplexed me about the Peninsular War was why the Portuguese monarchy didn't return to the country during the British intervention there. I'll confess I haven't done nearly enough research but I'm curious if there are any experts out there.

Now I'm not proposing they move the whole Royal Family back to Portugal the moment the British begin their campaign, but let's say that in 1809ish, John VI decides to leave the rest of his family behind in Brazil and participate in some fashion in the Peninsular War? Would it be entirely implausible for him to raise some kind of army in Brazil (perhaps a few thousand?) to contribute to the conflict?
