Plausibility check: Nazi raid on NW England

Raid via Ireland

With regard to a raid, would it be possible for the Germans to have enlisted the help of the Irish to get into England? The Republic of Ireland might not have been willing to do so, but according to one documentary I saw the Abwehr saw an opportunity in some of the anti-British Irish guerrilla groups and actively armed them. They even sent one of their number (I forget who.) over by submarine to investigate if a larger operation could be mounted. Could such a route be used to get a German team into England?

I hope this was a better plan than some of the Abwehr's ones. According to Macintyre, one double agent's main brief was to link up with violent extremist Welsh Nationalists in order to bring chaos to the UK...

Yeah, most of Abwehr's plans for Britain ranged from wildly impractical to hilarious.

I got Macintyre's Double Cross for my birthday in November. Couldn't believe how ridiculous some of these plans were. I've got Operation Mincemeat and Agent Zigzag in my "to read" pile...

Effectively its a non starter how do they get there? Not by U-boat as I don't think they ever managed to get into the Irish Sea beyond the approaches to St George's channel apart from in James Follet's fictional Cage of Eagles where one picks up someone in Morecambe Bay and an escapee attempts to scuttle a captures U-boat in Barrow in U700. Also some escapers are picked up in Walter Winwards the Skiddaw Escape. I'm not so sure a paratroops raid would have been feasible either the East Coast offers a better prospect there are claims that there was a raid on Orford Ness in 1940 or 41 but an investigation suggested it was a myth. The Eagle has landed was set roughly in East Anglia. Maybe somewhere on NE Scotland although it is rather near to Rosyth and Scapa so probably East Anglia for a hit and run raid.

Barrow could be bombed and was and was Walney Airfield really worth the risk?

Anyone taking a submarine into Morecambe Bay would have to have a death wish. Its shallow, has very strong currents, shifting sand banks and is ringed by airfields. This chart is small but if you mouse over it it zooms in a bit and gives you some idea of the conditions. The green on the chart is sandbanks uncovered at low tide, the blue is shoals. http://www.marinechandlery.com/prod...-chart-2010-morecambe-bay-and-approaches.aspx

Is this for a TL or a story? Significantly different things because for the former, it's highly unlikely but for the latter it would make an exciting read so fuck the ASB's and go for it!
