Plausibility check: How big a Mongol Empire?

Why is Java and the East Indies feasible, but not Indochina or the Philippines?

Philippines and the whole Nusantara, I don't think so.

But for Indochina and Java, it'd maybe feasible, though not in the long run, especially Java. And it wasn't like the troops were sent to conquer all of the island, only to punish Singhasari (which was on East Java) for Kertanegara's insolence. Even if the invasion was a success (which actually it was, it's just that Wijaya turned on them afterward), the Mongols would be unlikely to expand westward.

I was just wondering why the Yuan couldn't have swept the Indochinese Peninsula eventually to use as a springboard to attack the Indonesia. Of course, they don't really have any reason to other than "it's there."

Maybe the Philippines are out of the question, but I don't think Taiwan/Formosa is, necessarily.

1) Much cheaper to just send troops by ships to Java. Besides, for China Vietnam has been historically hard to deal with. Most of the time, they would be contented with just having Vietnam as official vassal.

2) Actually, more likely to have the Yuan dynasty expanding to the Philippines than to Formosa. At least in Philippines had some civilizations, trade resources of reasonable value (right?), and rather strategic geographical position (access to Moluccan spices ?) while even IOTL Chinese people only began to settle Taiwan during the 16th century, after they had the capability sufficient enough to feel "why not" while doing so on the island which previously was just to unattractive for its hostile headhunters and also lack of valuable resources.

Alright, gents. Imagine the maximum possible Mongol Empire as discussed in this thread (it seems like we're still unsure if they could've taken much of India, at least in the generations following Genghis Khan's death).

What would happen in and with this superstate?

One idea I had a while back was that a series of Mongol raids could kill off enough major Europeans to knock the Europeans into a few decades of civil war and the like.
