Plausibility check: Greek eastern africa and Greek-Ethiopia alliance?

Would it be plausible for Greece to colonize Horn of africa during the scramble for africa period? For example Somaliland and/or Eritrea. And forge an alliance with Ethiopia for their Coptic Christrian root?

Assuming Ottoman had already been dismantled.

Wouldn't some other power be better placed for seizing the area?

Greece still has a demographic disadvantage against Italy. Not to mention Russia's own interest in the Horn of Africa (because of the Orthodox elements there).

You are right, but what if Itady doesn't have the power to colonize? For example, never unified? Who would fill the Vacumm in eastern africa? I dont think that britain would be very happy for a Russian foothold in Africa.

This is more doable if an earlier Greek rebellion like the Orlov revolt were to succeed because it gives the Greeks more time to get off of the ground. Their most plausible colonies would be in Libya IMO given the connection to ancient Cyrenaica; they're not going to be able to take Egypt (where they have a greater historical connection) any time soon.

If Italy doesn't unite Greece could probably take some of the Horn of Africa. If any other colonizer wanted it, though, Greece wouldn't be able to hold it.

What if someone has took it already for example Spain?

Why would Spain take Cyrenaica? Obviously, it requires defeating the Ottoman Empire as Italy did in 1912. But then there's the fact that Spain's interest in Africa is going to revolve around Morocco (see OTL Spanish Morocco--can Spain do better?) or expanding their Rio Muni colony into OTL Cameroon or Gabon. I don't know if they could lodge a claim on the Congo, but they're as good as any power to partition the Congo if the European powers aren't awarding it to one nation like Belgium.

So no, Spain would need an interest in Cyrenaica to begin with, and that would require a war with a much more powerful country than any African state. 19th century Spain needs a lot of work to get to the level of 19th century united Italy.
