Plausibility Check: Divide Catholicism (~1800)

Okay, here's an example scenario:
The French Revolution is less anti-catholic and manages to capture Rome. The Pope dies of natural causes, and the French try to get a pro-revolutionary Pope in power. Would they succeed, and if so would Austria and other Catholics reject this pro-Revolution Pope?

Its almost impossible that they could did that, the conclave in the 19th century was not like medieval times when they can be "persuaded" ... a less anti-catholic jacobites would try, and probably get, a really "progressive" ( for the times ) pope, but too much mangling and they could find themselves excommunicated ...

But the Catholic church was not so centralized, probably a too progressive pope will be semi-ignored ( it happened a lot in OTL ) ...
