During the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, Joe Johnston lobbied heavily for Richmond to order Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry into Tennessee and/or northern Georgia to attack the railroads that were keeping Sherman's army supplied. Robert E. Lee also supported such a move. Sherman was very concerned about this, and so expended a huge amount of resources and manpower to protecting his supply lines.

Would such a move have been plausible? If Forrest had been ordered to go after Sherman's supplies, could he have disrupted Sherman's advance against Atlanta?
