Plausibility Check: Could Forrest Have Cut Sherman's Supply Lines?

I have not spent a lot of time reading about the Western Theatre, but it is my impression that if needed Sherman could amass enough Union cavalry to outweigh, wear down, and take out any force Forrest could field. I assume he could do so without having to completely stop operations against Johnston.

Until General Wilson arrived to reorganize the Union calvary forces in the Western Theater (which was after Atlanta fell), they were worse than useless. During the Atlanta Campaign, Joseph Wheeler's troopers cut Sherman's horsemen to ribbons.
