Plausibility Check: British Philippenes?

In 1763, the British captured Manila as apart of thier advances in the Seven Years War. Now, is there any way that Spain would be forced to give up the Philippenes to the British?

If there was one place the British lacked bases in the eighteenth century, it was the Pacific. They would certainly want it, but could they by anychance get it in the treaty of Paris?

by pointing to spaniards how philippines is unuseful to them in the treaty of paris actually allot of spaniards want to dump the philippines that is what they should do,or you can swap territory for example swap parts of their colonies in north america with the philippines..

Well, the Manila Galleons were the thing that contributed to Spain's continued though greatly diminishing wealth. I'm not sure it would take just a discussion with the British who want the archipalgo to themselves.

I'm just wondering how the British would use the Philippenes to boost thier pacific trading contacts? would the BEIC take it over?

If I remember a book correctly, the Spanish governor was able to raise an army and besiege the British troops in Manila shortly after it was captured-and they were already suffering in the tropical heat. They held on, but essentially got saved by the Treaty of Paris allowing them to sail back to their Indian bases.

The book also made a point to tell only MANILA was conquered, not the entire archipalego...hell, by this point I don't think even Spain had entire control yet.

It was basically a power play. A HELLA effective power play, but to keep it, IMO, would have been more trouble than it was worth for Britain.

In my timeline, I do have the English taking control of Manila during the Forty Years War, and as a result, Spain cedes the islands to them.

In our universe, I think the British did take control of the islands for a short time. Maybe it was during the Seven Years War; I'll have to look that up.

Yep, they took Manila in 1762. Bloody good show, it was.

I checked wikipedia and it turns out the British and Spanish delegations didn't even know about Manila's capture and it got lumped in later with the rest of the territories exachanged for the return of Minorca. What if they had heard about it; there;s one more bargaining chip on the table for Britain...

Interesting POD. Perhaps they do exchange it for Florida/Minorca, but not lump Cuba in (as your post would imply)? Then we have the British controlling from Ungava to Portland Bight than merely to the Straits of Florida...and who knows, it's infinitely more attractive to Anglo-Saxons/Protestants than Quebec was. I wonder how an anglicized Cuba might play out in American and British history if the ARW happens on schedule.

Or hearing about it, they keep cuba but are forced to trade at least Luzon and Florida for Minorca

I wonder if it might be better to abort the 1763 expedition. It only secured Manila, and actually did a nice job smashing up the colony, as the colony's infrastructure collapsed.

But if you leave it until the 1790s, Raffle could snatch it up.
