Back in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I, the Japanese Empire's Military were notorious for their honorable and humane behaviour when dealing with Russia, and later Germany, the POW were treated with utmost respect and humanity (The Russians practically like guests; and the Germans became so enamored with Japan that some were willing to go live to Japan).

So my question is the following... Could the horrific atrocities of World War II possibly be avoided? Could the military culture of the early XX century Japan have remained honor-bound and avoid the rise of military fascism and the related horrors it brought?
