Plausibility Check: A modern state being renamed the Roman Empire?

Is it possible that a modern country would go as far as to rename their country the Roman Empire? Several countries did claim it. Tsarist Russia and the Ottoman Empkre did after the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire. There was the Holy Roman Emperor and Napoleon. Maybe the Greeks would if Britain and/or France give them more support in the Greco-Turkish War? Or the Italians?

Italy might have.

Otherwise, I guess you could have had Romania claim it after WWII or after the Soviets left.

I would say the easiest would be the Greeks capturing Constantinople in 1920. Rename the country and move the capital.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Greeks consider calling themselves the Roman Empire after the 1820 Revolution?

Hah. I can't see Benny the Moose taking that well. That might get him to rename Italy the Roman Empire.

Did the Italians behind the unification consider naming it the Roman Empire?

Not really AFAIK. But some at least were pretty big about Roman heritage. The whole "Empire" nonsense was typically Fascist, although it began slightly before, after the colonial ventures as far as I can tell. Still a full generation after unification.
There was a some emphasis on Africa in that discourse.

Sounds odd. My understanding is that Classical heritage (meaning pre-Roman for them) was far more important to Greek nationalism than the Eastern Roman one. If anything, I gather they restored the name of "Hellenes" as opposed to "Rum*"/"Rhomaioi".
* Turkish form.

It would have cute if the Greeks had continued to call themselves Romaioi after all those years. Guess they'd beat Romania to the punch in claiming that name. :p

Greeks. liberate themselves and declare Roman Empire

Recipe for mid term disaster unless they agreed to name themselves western and eastern romans really quick... especially since western romans are tragically destroyed IOTL
