Plausibility Check: A Different "Perot"

Is there any plausible way another individual could have played the role Ross Perot historically did in the 1992 election? I'm not talking about the myth that Perot was entirely responsible for Bush's loss. I mean is there any conceivable way someone else could have led a relatively successful independent candidacy, to the extent that the candidate is considered, however briefly, to be a genuine contender for the Presidency. Could anyone else have successfully procured the same kind of ballot access Perot and his supporters did? Or was the success of the Perot campaign entirely predicated on the individual personality of Ross Perot? I mean success in the sense that he did better than any other third candidate since Wallace, if I remember correctly. If the independent idea is something that could have arisen around someone else, who might this alternate independent candidate be?
