Plausability the New Party a major factor

In OTL Mosely formed the 'New Party' after leavign Labour before being drawn to overt Fascism

In OTL the collapse of the 2nd Labour government was followed by the "national government' which looked patriotic.

Also in OTL the tories had some real problems with splits, especially over India.

Now WI Labour had held on a little longer, trying to take on the markets, the tories had split but thre had still been an election in the middle of the depression between Oct31 and March 33.

Could 'the New Party' have been efective, even won.

Of course as I understand it Moesley party at that time was an odd mix of people fairly far to the left with proto fasicts.

Could it have happened?

What would a New Party government or official opposition be like

Unlikely, especially with the 1931 election. The election it completely shattered the New Party's momentum even before it had got going (they got only 0.2% of the vote). If they had gone on, there was the question of whether a fascist party would be able to turn itself into a large-scale national movement by 1935 after such a disastrous start. The BUF was a fresh start (as such) and was probably a necessary one.

The New Party wasn't really a fascist entity, it was more like the SDP fifty years later: a more centrist breakaway from Labour. Mosley didn't go fascist until after the New Party failed.

1931 is not a good election for any new party to make a breakthrough given the level of the Conservative landslide (and their National Labour and Liberal partners). Bad timing, really.
