Well tough titty for them. There's a war against terrorism going on, a vice president got murdered, and national security issues with Powell's expertise addressing them will trump social issues. Leave that stuff to Bush's re-election team.

(Not that I think Powell is the likeliest candidate, but certainly him over, say, John Sidney McCain III)
 
No, George W. Bush didn't want to be associated with his dad politically. There were moments in 2000 he borderline insulted his dad on the campaign trail to make himself look better.

You would far more likely see Bush Sr. taking his son as vice president than vice bersa.
