Plausability Check: Pope Jefferson Davis

I've said it before on this site that Jeff Davis almost converted to the Roman Catholic Church. But it just occured to me today that this could have wider impacts than his politics. In fact, say that his first love interest rejects him (possibly for being a Papist). Perhaps he turns to the monastery or seminary. In which case, he could conceivably become a Bishop. But how likely is it to get an American Pope, Jefferson Davis, by 1900? (Assuming his life span is extended). If it can happen, what happens if he becomes Pope in, say, 1878 (death of Pius IX)?

Skippy the ASB has spoken!

ASB. No way the Roman Catholic Church elevates a person who is NOT Italian in the 1800's, especially from a nation that is predominantly Protestant!
