Plain Republic .....why?

In every map of a Balkanize United States you always see a CSA, Texas, New England, maybe California. But a country of the Plain States? Why????? Why do people always put that there?

I'd guess, without knowing much about the area, is that the Plains States, in a situation where the USA is balkanised, have a culture and goals too different from any of the successor republics to warrant their joining one of them. At least by today's standards, they are politically different enough from the Northeast and Pacific Seaboard to be suspicious of joining either, and they are also fairly culturally different from the South, I'd venture. Most of all, these places have populations that would make whatever the Plains States want irrelevant; if the goals of, say, the CSA or Northeast in a scenario such as this are completely different to those of the Plains States, then the Plains cannot do anything about it. If they are independent like the other successor states, then they can express their own culture, politics and goals without being rendered irrelevant by other populations, like they would be as part of, say, the Republic of Greater New England.

At least, that'd be the thinking if one actually wanted a reason for it besides it looks cool and everyone else does it.

In fairness, they'd still be unable to assert themselves against the CSA or the Pacific Coast or whatever, since they have such little population that they couldn't project any influence anyway. If a "plain state" or "plain states" were to arise, they would essentially become satellite states of the larger ones.

My favorite is the "this portion will become aligned with XX country", which is the worst cliche. In what world would the American south come under the influence of Mexico? Mexico can't even assert its influence in Mexico, never mind over a state that is about as large and much more powerful.

TV has the Plains Nation of Revolution. It's not unfeasible that a plain state would be created. The real question is: how long would it last?

not very long i think.

Do most of the states in the mid west even have a strong enough economy to remain viably independent?

Honestly that's the biggest issue I see killing any independent midwest state as they just don't gather enough revenue on their own to be able to afford the standard of living that most citizens would be fine with as well as the money needed to fund other important matters like infrastructure and other matters.

I mean heck, during the shutdown several weeks back, it was estimated that keeping the national parks open in some of these states was alone gonna be basically unsustainable finacially speaking in the long term so just going on that i see a midwest republic/federation not lasting very long

They have a lot of nukes don't they? That would make them stronger independent than as a part of another nation.

The use of a different term would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Listen : a cliché, by definition, is a wrong idea that survives only because it's was so overused by people not willing to think it trough and keep a superficial observation at it.
Someone using a cliché, isn't prooving its intelligence, that's the less I can say if you prefer a longer, less hurtful way.
