In another WI thread I made a passing mention of Nicéphore Niépce (1765-1833), a French inventor. In 1807 he built a machine he named the pyréolophore, which was actually an internal combustion engine. In OTL he didn't develop the idea beyond the prototype level, and instead went on to invent photography. So the POD for this WI is simple: in 1807 he realizes he's got a winner concept, and continues his research into automotive propulsion, eventually coming up with a marketable vehicle-mounted engine. What next?
