Pierre Trudeau

During the riots of 1968 in Montreal (the day before the 1968 election in Canada), when rioters threw rocks and bottles at the grandstand where Pierre Trudeau was sitting, he stayed seated, despite the pleas of aides to head for cover, and impressed many with his courage.

PoD:

One of the rioters on the St. Jean Baptiste Day parade is armed with a .45-caliber revolver, and empties it into Trudeau, killing him instantly.

Effects on Canada, anyone (Canadian posters, feel free to comment)?

First off, Trudeau had become PM on April 25 with Pearson's resignation. ;) The Liberals would be left without a leader. Most likely it will be Allan MacEachen, who was Trudeau's DPM, as successor. MacEachen is of the same social democratic bent as Trudeau (his tenure as Finance Minister in the 1980s is notoriously ghastly) but without PET's charm he loses to Bob Stanfield in 1972. Without Trudeau Levesque has no equally charismatic opponent in the federalist camp. The Tories would pursue detente with the PQ. If Bourassa signs the Victoria Accords of '71 (which included a de jure veto) then that brings Quebec onboard without the patriation mess of OTL.

I hated Trudeau but I would hate even more seeing Canadian politics influenced by anything more than a cream pie. I would have liked to see more cream pies, however.
