Is there a link to this alt Cold War timeline? I'm interested to read it.
Unfortunately, there isn’t. The best thing to do is find all posts by the theg*ddam*hoi2fan in this thread. It’ll have explanations of what the world is like in this kaissereich universe. Such as what nations are strongest, differences from otl, and some proxy wars mentioned.

The book cover of Volume 1 of the "Second American Civil War" series, where historian Jack C. Walsh talks about the different factions of the fateful tragedy that befell America many decades ago. The book series received high praise for its detail and directness, and is usually now use as reference material by history teachers all over the world.

Rioters watch a shop burn as violence overtakes the LA Ghetto

A Commonwealth Soldier watches over a burned out mall

More troops are sent into LA

The infamous Rooftop Koreans guard against the violence spreading out of the Ghetto

Established in 1942 soon after the end of Reconstruction and solidification of Prophet Armstrong's rule the LA ghetto was one of dozens spread out across the Commonwealth. The LA Ghetto was however especially terrible as almost half a million blacks were forced to live in as little space as possible, with the Ghetto only getting one expansion in its entire history. Rampant poverty, pervasive disease, non-existent education, rampant gang violence and a lack of basic services like running water led to the First Ghetto Uprising in 1963 after a Black man, Joseph Brown, was shot dead for trying to leave the Ghetto. After it was crushed the Ghetto was 'cleansed' of rebels both real and perceived and the blacks were again forced into slavery in all but name. However in 1997 things were at a boiling point. The Commonwealth's recent warming of relations to the Japanese Empire led to an increased amount of Asian immigrants to the Commonwealth usually settling in East Coast cities like LA, Seattle and San Fransisco. In LA there were so many that they were 'granted' their own Ghetto in 1982 derisively called Piss Town, though formally as The Asian Settlement Area. In 1996 the ASA was expanded at the cost of the Ghetto which was shrunk down. When Commonwealth soldiers began evicting blacks from their Towers to make room for construction of a new wall marking the new borders, violence erupted. The myriad of gangs which plagued the Ghetto, most notably the Young Bloods, the Rejected Sons and 18th Street Gang, all stopped fighting each other and began lashing out at Commonwealth troops. The soldiers were unprepared for such coordinated attacks from the so called Sons of Ham and were forced to pull out of the Ghetto and regroup. With no more external enemies to focus their anger on, the gangs turned inwards as riots and anti government revolts tore the Ghetto apart. Fires raged as gun battles erupted across the city. Collaborators, or those who have connections with the Ghetto Government in any way, were killed or forced to flee until finally the California National Guard was deployed. After two weeks of riots 15,000 Guardsmen, with the aid of 2,000 regular Commonwealth soldiers, invaded the Ghetto. Anybody who fired on them was summarily cut down and those who surrendered were spirited away into hastily built 'Settlement Camps' outside the city. Within three days the Ghetto was calm and over the next month it was completely emptied. In the end 152 blacks were killed, 93 were injured and 4 soldiers were killed and 15 were injured.

The Liquidation of the Ghetto showed to the world just how bad conditions were for blacks in America and many nations, led by the Russian Empire and German Kaiserreich, demanded that conditions improve before, in the words of Kaiser Friedrich, "harsh measures were taken". Under mounting international pressure High Minister Garner Armstrong declared the creation of the Black Autonomous Zone in the Deep South. Governed much like an Indian Reservation it was touted by the government as a way for the blacks "to build a better nation, a nation for themselves." without much if any government interference. The whites within the BAZ were still allowed to live there but most chose to move anyway. Today the BAZ is the poorest area of the Commonwealth, even if the Commonwealth hardly acknowledges its existence. But within the BAZ there is a rich oral history of the Ghetto Uprising and the Black Youth activists of today largely mark it as the beginning of the Civil Rights movement in the Commonewalth.

Al Capone at the First Trade Union Congress representing the Irregular Militia, or the Bandit Militia due to it being made up of criminals like himself

Prominent AFL-CIO leaders are publicly executed after Smedley Butler reveals their plot to overthrow Capone

A pictures of the first unit of the ROSS, Capone's secret police

Chairman Frank Nitti, soon after his appointment
With the outbreak of the Second American Civil War in 1937 many saw nothing but horror on the horizon, but Al Capone saw an opportunity. The CSA, a Syndicalist nation fighting ostensibly for the People, was based in his home town of Chicago. It was also being attacked from all sides and in desperate need for help so, using his trademark charm, Al Capone offered his and all mobster's services to the Syndicates. At first Bill Haywood was against the very idea of it declaring that to compromise with criminals would make the Syndicates no better than the forces they were fighting. However as the war progressed and the CSA inched closer and closer to defeat, Haywood found he had no choice. Capone would be allowed to help and in return would be given a seat at the first Trade Union Congress. Almost instantly the word shot through the criminal underworld that Capone had an in with the CSA and to help them at every turn. Suddenly, guns were showing up in Detroit with Canadian and even German markings, Bonnie and Clyde rampaged through the Midwest inspiring and founding Syndicalist militia to rise up against their Longist oppressors, other famous gangers like John Dillinger turned their gang into a militia and went to the Front and gangsters in every major city began sending a cut of their profits to Capone and, by extension, the CSA. With this influx of cash and guns the CSA's struggling economy went into overdrive as factories were reopened, militia were raised and suddenly the War looked to be going in the CSA's favor. It still took a year of long and hard fighting to subdue the myriad of factions jostling for power. But when it was over the CSA stood triumphant and Bill Haywood stepped away from power after revealing his terminal lung cancer diagnosis. So, the First Trade Union Congress was not only a Congress to found a nation, but choose its leader. There were many factions aiming for the Chairman's seat ranging from the moderate like the Social Patriots who many accused of just being Federalists in Syndicalist clothes, all the way to the TUUL whose leaders Foster and Browder were ascribing to Mosely's Totalist philosophy and somewhere among them was Al Capone. While not having any unions backing him made him free to do what he wanted, it also left him at a disadvantage in a new era where union power translated directly into national power. So, to gain this national power he so desperately needed Capone began to bribe many delegates from dozens of different unions. They could still claim to support whoever they wanted, but if they wanted to be rich they knew when the time came, they would vote for Capone. After a month of arguing and jostling the votes were tallied and to everybody but Capone's surprise, Al Capone was elected as the 2nd Chairman of the CSA.

Capone wasted no time in paying back his supporters. HIs government was filled to bursting with gangsters from all corners of America and those union delegates who supported them came home richer than they could've imagined. To secure his power however Capone realized he needed to get rid of the unions, at least those who oppose him like the TUUL and the American Serviceman's Union led by Smedley Butler. On January 15th, 1939 Smedley Butler vanished. A vocal critic of Capone for his past actions many assumed he had been killed. They were proven wrong however when Butler, with a few inconspicuous bruises and cuts on his face, appeared before the Trade Union Congress to reveal a sinister plot in the works. He laid out a massive and intricate conspiracy linking the remaining industrialists to, rather conveniently, the unions opposing Capone in a plot to overthrow the CSA and re-establish the US Federal Government. To fight this dastardly Business Plot Capone founded the ROSS, the Revolutionary Office of Strategic Services, led by Frank Nitti to find all enemies of the state. The first to go were the major unions, the AFL-CIO, TUUL and ASU were all combed through and anybody with any suspicion of reactionary thought was taken into custody and vanished. People came forward revealing their neighbors as members of the AFL, TUUL or ASU or who they thought were reactionary. This led to the Great Purge as American society was liquidated of anybody who would oppose The Boss. Its unknown how many died but estimates range from 1 - 2 million. Meanwhile, American society began to markedly change. The Catholic Church which the CSA had denounced in its declaration of independence, was ignored by Capone. Coming from a Catholic Italian-American family he couldn't bring himself to fight an institution so woven into his family and ancestry. The ROSS, and even government employees (who were majority former mobsters) began setting up legalized rackets across the nation. The Rackets all were administered as a government organ in the open. Businesses would pay their local overseers to allow them to stay open without harassment, and those overseers would send some to their boss, who would send some to their boss and so on and so on until the money reached the Big Boss Capone. Sometimes entire cities would set aside a Protection Fund to pay the government wit the largest being NYC's which had ballooned to 15 million dollars a year by 1942. Those who spoke out against this blatant Gangsterism were simply labeled a reactionary and vanished. And so, America convulsed as the Mob bled it dry, all while its leader slowly lost his mind.

Capone had syphilis and gohnorrea which both had begun to eat away at his brain, something which had been evident by as early as the early 1930s. By the end of the 30s however, Capone had gone diagnosably insane. Paranoia fueled his every action, he regularly had his guards changed out and those he thought were not as loyal they should be were shot dead on the spot, usually by Capone himself. Raging parties fueled by drugs and prostitutes were thrown every week at his palatial villa outside Chicago and everybody was required to enjoy themselves or face the harshest punishment. He began to write lists of names dozens of pages long which were to be handed to the ROSS to be executed. On his September 19th, 1940 List he wrote his own name no less than five times. Nitti decided to ignore those. He even started fishing in his pool which of course had no fish. By the end of 1940 however, the Central Committee realized the Boss was all but braindead. So, in a secret vote held without Capone's knowledge they decided Frank Nitti would be the new Chairman. Now all they had to do was unseat Capone. This was however incredibly easy. They just let him pretend to be Chairman for the next seven years. Since he stopped leaving his villa, he could never really know if his orders were carried out so an almost elaborate charade was put on to make Capone think he was running things as he slowly died. Finally on March 1st, 1947 Capone was found dead in his bedroom. His death was announced later that week and his body was buried in a grand mausoleum in Chicago which is now visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Nitti, his successor was however more brutal than Capone could've hoped to be [...]

MacArthur announcing his intention to run as President at Soldier Field in Chicago, December 1939

Floyd Olson of the Progressive Party. He would become the most prominent of third party candidates in 1940.

The results of the 1940 Election, the first popular vote election of a US President in American history.

The MacArthur led military dictatorship that controlled the Federal Government during the Second American Civil War was dissolved on May 12 1939 following the Federal victory in the conflict. Despite this, Douglas MacArthur remained as "Interim President" of the United States before the new and revised elections officially place the official POTUS in November 1940. The General pushed for the abolishment of the Electoral College Vote and called for the direct election of the US President by the people, which happened with the passing and ratification of the 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution on November 28 1939. It also marked the end of the century old 2 Party System between the Republican and Democratic Parties as a multi party system was put into play, where third parties, for the first time in a few decades, can run in national elections without conflicting problems such as ballot restrictions and what states they are allowed to campaign in. Longist and Socialist parties were of course banned for national security concerns, and to avoid another socialist or Longist from controlling the White House.

But seemingly, even with the new multi party system at play, 2 distinct parties emerged to fill what the Grand Old Party and the Democrats had left behind: the American Unity Party, formed by General MacArthur and his loyal right hand man, J Edgar Hoover, that advocated for the maintaining of American independence on the world stage, preventing reliance on other countries as the US began rebuilding itself from the civil war's damages, advocating for a strong military, and other stances that seemingly mirrored the standings of the Republican Party of old. The other party was the New Federalist Party, formed by General Omar Bradley and Dwight D. Eisenhower, which pushed for mass reformations across the Federal Government, calling for reduction of military forces in exchange for the welfare of the people, and a non interventionist foreign policy, which reflected the Democratic Party's stance. Many speculate that they were living in a "new Republican - Democrat system" that were led by military figures. It wouldn't be until 1944 that non military people would take control for the presidency.

Wanting to further push his reforms for the Government, and wanting to increase America's presence on the globe despite advocating non reliancy on bigger countries, MacArthur announced his intention to run as president of the United States on December 8 1939. Several of his own allies declared for the candidacy for the AUP, notably John William Davis and William Harrison Standley, two of MacArthur's former ministers during the military dictatorship. Even Hoover declared. The AUP Primaries in August 1940 would end up bringing Douglas as the candidate for the presidency. He chose Hoover as his running mate for vice president. The MacArthur campaign ran on a platform that called for no reliance on foreign powers as the "Second Reconstruction", as it is called, continues on, a strong military presence to thwart any attempts by the Internationale and Germany to probe and influence the United States, calling for increased efforts to a mixed economy to compromise the workers and businessmen, and the reducing of taxes for the meantime as reconstruction took place.

The New Federalist Party's race for the candidacy was far more heated. Out of the total 7 candidates that declared, three stood out: first was Omar Bradley, the founder and current chair of the party that advocated for non interventionism, global cooperation between democratic nations, limiting businessmen from participating in politics except in national elections, and the promotion of a new sense of patriotism among the American population. Next was Eisenhower, the vice chairman of the party. He ran under the platform of the promise of reducing the income tax (similar to MacArthur), advocating limited intervention in foreign politics and taking a tough stance on socialism and German expansionism. His now famous "Eisenhower Doctrine" advocated for the containing of both of the mention threats to American independence. The last was Harry Truman, the first non armed forces candidate to run for the presidency, which advocated practically his own version of the Eisenhower Doctrine, the promotion of civil rights for African Americans, and the increased participation of non Whites in politics. Truman shockingly was the frontrunner at first, but after the walkout of several Southern conservatives during the primaries due to his civil rights platform, he lost momentum. Bradley won the nomination after a heated contest. He chose Truman as his running mate, which further angered the southern conservatives.

The Progressive Party was now free to run without hindrance in the multi party system. It became the most prominent third party to run in the election. They fielded the now famed Floyd Olson, who was the proponent for the Republican - Democrat Coalition ticket back in the 1936 Election, which was rejected by both sides. He won the primaries for the party, as expected, and chose Senator Elmer Benson of the former's home state of Minnesota, as his running mate.

Bradley consistently used attack ads to warn everyone about the impending dangers of MacArthur's tax cuts, convincing thousands that he was focusing on reducing taxes for the rich class. MacArthur backfired saying that taking an early stance against German and Internationale aggression would result in "America's immediate and swift downfall" and that his proposal to limit the private sector's participation in the government "reeks of socialist rhetoric." Douglas also called Bradley a "socialist" at one time, while Bradley responded by calling MacArthur a "deranged imperialist dictator". Despite close calls, MacArthur came out on top, winning 23 states. Bradley came in second, carrying 22 states. The Progressives actually won states and came in third, carrying 3 states. This victory is the closest margin of victory in the now called "Popular Vote Era" in US history.

As the second US Civil War broke out in 1937 Longist forces were at a distinct disadvantage. While ostensibly controlling a lot of America their lands were in the Great Planes and therefore both not heavily populated and not industrial. Looking desperately for allies Huey Long received telegram from popular radio figure Father Coughlin with a message from Pope Julius IV. The Pope offered to help organize a Catholic regiment of international volunteers led by Philip Acosta Carroll, a descendent of the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. Long, desperate for any aid he could get, agreed to the proposal and so Carroll set about organizing the Knights of Columbus. After much help from the Pope Carroll set out on a gaggle of ships for America from his exile in North Italy with little more than a dream and a gaggle of poorly equipped volunteers. When they arrived at Baltimore a few weeks later they found the city mostly empty of garrisoning troops. Federal forces secured the city on the outbreak of the War and moved onwards to the Front leaving it undefended for an attack from behind. Within minuets the city was under Knight control and Carroll issued a decree from Federal Hill declaring the beginning of a new, Catholic America. This was met by an outcry of both anger and confusion by the largely protestant city and by extension nation, but Carroll didn't have long to deal with it. Within a week Federal troops were entering the cities suburbs from their base in DC and fierce fighting broke out. The Knights were outgunned and undersupplied but Carroll urged his men to fight on saying that God would save them, and it seemed as if he was right. After a few more weeks of savage fighting as the Knights fell back deeper and deeper into the city, a severe storm suddenly hit the area (now thought to be a hurricane) and tornadoes touched down in the city. The Federal troops were thrown into disarray as the storm ran its course through the city and the Knights took shelter, waiting for a break in the storm to resume the offensive. When it finally did come two days later, the Knights moved fast and hard, smashing the Federal offensive and forcing them from the city. Carroll declared this a miracle from God and many Baltimorans began to consider his words more seriously. Despite this grace of god Carroll also knew their position was untenable. They were to far from friendly lines and to exposed. So, he told the city and his unit that to survive they must head West and link up with advancing Longist forces out of the Midwest. It would be an arduous march but it must be done if the Knights were to survive. As the Knights began what would be known as the Long March on August 2nd, 1937 they were followed by a non-insignificant number of newly converted Catholics fervently devoted to Carroll.

After 11 days of fighting, marching and scavenging Carroll, 1,523 Knights and 5,987 Catholics arrived at Longist lines only barely avoiding getting attacked by rapidly advancing Longist troops. When they told their story, they initially weren't believed but as more refugees arrived and confirmed the story of the March, its legend spread like wildfire throughout the American Union State. Carroll was celebrated as a hero, the Knights were put on a pedestal for their commitment and Huey Long himself even met with Carroll to congratulate him. With this newfound fame came a growing Catholic revival in the American Union State. The State was already particularly popular with evangelicals to begin with however, when news of Carroll's march and good fortune during the Battle of Baltimore reached them Carrolls claims of being Gods Instrument on Earth seemed more credible than ever. Catholicism, once isolated largely to the North-East and Deep South, exploded through the prairies as Columbian Evangelicals crisscrossed the new nation spreading the word of the Catholic Bible and Carrolls grace by god. Huey Long, who had by now more or less won the War and had begun looking to the future of America, became worried at this new religious revival and particularly Carroll's growing confidence. He began planning to institute a new bill to limit the spread of Catholicism, but also put it in a drawer until the end of the War. Despite his growing danger Long knew Carroll was more useful to him now alive than dead. So, he bided his time as Carroll grew and grew in power. Eventually, after the last Pacific soldiers surrendered in the ruins of San Diego Carroll wasted no time in establishing the Holy American League, a uniform political entity to further Catholicism in the American Union State. However, with the war over Long saw his chance to make his move so he called a special meeting of Congress where he, along with Fox Conner, General Staff of the American Military and Gerald L. K. Smith, chief ideologue of the America First movement. Halfway through Long's two hour speech on the dangers of Catholics an explosion tore through the building and killed all inside. With the Government dead Carroll marched on New Orleans and declared the Holy American League to be in charge. When Henry Ford tried to gather a militia in Detroit to oppose him the Knights of Columbus, now acting as Carroll's internal security service, stormed his mansion in the dead of night and dragged him off to prison.

When America awoke on the day of June 4th, 1939 they had no idea they had awoken to a new America, radically changed from the one they went to bed in. The Knights of Columbus, having already established chapters in every state capitol/major city suddenly fanned out to secure Carrolls new regime, however found thankfully little to do. When Americans went to church that day they found that their local priests singing Carrolls praises, claiming he was ordained to rule by the will of God and to go against him would be to fight for the Devil. Due to the Third Great Awakening which had made America a fiercely religious and increasingly Catholic country, the people took these words to heart. Carroll did not waste a moment in securing his rule. His first target was the dual evils of liberalism and the Klan. His first major move, after cementing his rule, was to ban liberalism. The Law for the Preservation of American Morality banned any form of liberalism including any liberal political parties as godless athiests seeking to drag America into darkness. The liberal parties, already sidelined by the AFP, were suddenly destroyed by targeted raids on their headquarters across the nation. Their leaders were jailed, their records seized and propaganda burned in the streets by jubilant crowds. Ancient institutions like the GOP and Democratic parties were then assigned to the dustbin of history. Carroll's next target was the Klu Klux Klan. Fierce supporters of the far right Old Democrat Party they had begun a campaign of terror and racial violence across the Occupied South led by their leader D. C. Stephenson. Not only that they were a staunchly Protestant organization which could not survive in this new, Catholic America. To finish them off once and for all the Army of God on Earth, formally the US Army, was sent into the South to hunt them down to the man. While in actuality they only made a few dozen raids and only arrested around 150 Klan members total the fear they brought with them was enough to break the Klan in two. While Stephenson wanted to continue to fight with the 'Old' or Black Klan the 'Young' or New Klan under Hiram Evans wants to make peace and go underground. The infighting tore the Klan to pieces and while the Klan reportedly still survives, even to this day, they only have a few dozen members. After that was done and the main outside threats to his rule were finished Carroll then set about restructuring the US economy under the so called McCabee Plan. Under the Plan US Reconstruction Aid was targeted to Catholic areas first and filtered down to Protestant areas. This encouraged conversion as it would allow for more aid to be sent to their area. By mid 1940 the US economy was at pre-Civil War levels and growing by the day, conversions were growing at a similar rate and the Holy American League was the unquestioned ruler of the United States. With the homefront secured Carroll was given an interesting proposition by a fringe group of Catholics in the League. While Carroll seemingly initially intended to name Jesus Christ King of the new Empire of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a fringe group of League politicians came to him with a different idea. The ancient House Stuart of Scotland was still around in the name of Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart, the senior male descendent of James II and he lived in Canada. They suggested that he be crowned as a pretender to the British throne and give them an excuse to strike the godless syndicalists! Carroll was quickly brought over to their views and soon after that King Jacobo I of America was crowned in the new capital of St Guadalupe (fmr St Louis).

With their figurehead established (Carroll was graciously retained as Arch-Regent) the new Jacobite Kingdom of America went to war. Over the next two years the Jacobite Armies marched from Yukon to Patagonia defeating all in their wakes. The American war machine awoke and none could tame the beast. When the time for invading Brazil came forward King Jacobo put his foot down. Brazil had already been subordinated under Integralist Portugal and Jacobo, while not a fanatical Catholic like Carroll, saw no point in fighting an 'Englightened nation' like his. After Jacobo went to the press with his objections, Carrolls hands were tied and before the week was out he had signed the Pact of Lisboa with the King of Portugal Nuno I and created the Holy League. While merely an alliance of convenience Carroll did use Portugese ports to supply Operation Homecoming, or the Invasion of the British isles in 1944. [...]
