Underground facility somewhere in Colorado, US gov had relocated thousands of workers and scientists to such bunkers. (Source: Deep Impact).
This is an lost opportunity for a meta-joke by putting the bunkers in Arkansas instead.

I had never pay too much attention to Deep Impact and i don't think that Arkansas will be a great place in WWZ due to his close proximity with Mississippi and Texas.

A marketplace is particularly hard hit safe zone in Missouri. Striped down vehicles like the pickup to the left were sometimes favored by survivors who preferred speed over durability when it came to outrunning zombie hordes.

japanese-bunker-at-sumarine-base-east-new-britain-papua-new-guinea-A2DCET.jpg

A former WWII Japanese bunker in Sumarine Base, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Though bunkers were long cleared of any weapons and ordnance, many survivors sought refuge in the bunkers during the outbreak, hoping the steel reinforced doors and solid concrete construction would help them against the horde of Zeds.

(OOC: Got the idea of WWII bunkers and machine gun nests from Dead Island since the Royal Palms Resort have several bunkers lining up the resort serving as maintenance sheds and war-time memory. Despite their age, they actually hold well against the Infected.)

US soldiers manning a hastily erected barrier respond to a Zack incursion near Canon City, Colorado. Fortifications such as these with their odd mix of primitive passive defenses and more hi tech weaponry were a common sight during the initial efforts to establish a defensive line after the retreat from the East.

A survivor walks near the quarantine cordon of the Capitol Building in an abandoned Washington, D.C. Despite the capital being abandoned to the Zack, resistance in the form of surviving Secret Service, DC Metropolitan Police, Capitol Police, military, and armed civilians continued living in the fortified government buildings.

Residents of Brooklyn, NY attempt to fight back against the growing zombie outbreak on American soil. Often using homemade armor like football gear and using weapons like baseball bats and pistols these ad-hoc groups fought hard to preserve their city even as the remnants of the NYPD & NY Army National Guard retreated. It is unknown how many New Yorkers took part in these militias or how many were killed.
