Addition to this post

John McCain, Senator from Mississippi (1987-2018), Democratic nominee for President in the election of 2000.

220px-Joe_Lieberman_official_por.jpg

Joe Lieberman, Senator from Connecticut (1989-2013), Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2000.

One of the most infamous episodes about the campaign in the election of 2000 was McCain's heritage as a Southern. Remmberancists attacked McCain because he was a Southern and his father was an admiral in the Confederate Navy in the Second Great War, saying that he'd turn America into Featherston's CSA. However, the most infamous would be attacks on McCain's running mate, Joe Lieberman. A slogan was created by Anti-Semitic Remmberancists known as "Featherston/Goldman 2000." McCain responded to these attacks by saying he had distanced himself from Featherston's Confederacy. The Republicans and Socialists would not use these attacks in their campaign ads and denounce them. Leo Victor Enos would famously say, "This is now the 21st-century McCain has denounced Featherston's Confederacy, and the CSA is now long gone; we should unite with the South, not cause more division."
After the election, some pundits would say that McCain's Southern heritage was why he lost the election.

Very true. Japan will develope such things eventually because it see USA being serious threat for its empire.
And they were mentioned to of had a nuclear research program in the books. Hell OTL they had a nuclear research program and were closer to the bomb than the Nazi's.
I don't understand this perception some people have that Japan wouldn't develop nukes, or that Japan is some backwater run by knuckle draggers, despite the fact throughout the entire book series they were on par with the other great powers tech wise. It makes no sense, and it reminds me of Truman in Oppenheimer when he arrogantly claimed the Soviet's would never develop a bomb themselves despite Oppenheimer warning him they would.

Portrait of Puyi, the last emperor of China, and the Emperor of Manchuria, by an unknown photographer, c. 1930s–1940s.

Puyi was installed as the Head of the Japanese puppet state of Manchuria. In 1961, Puyi had passed away. With riots breaking out in Manchuria following Puyi's death, the Japanese, unwilling to search for a distant relative of the late Imperial Chinese dynasty, handed Manchuria to the National Government of the Republic of China, another puppet state.

Rare photo of the Manchurian riots. Some historians would consider this the start of rebellions against Japanese rule from the 1970s to the 1990s.

... is it just me or would McSweeney have been a very credible candidate for a T-191 McCarthy had he lived long enough to go into politics? (one imagines that "Witch Hunt" is one of the few forms of political manoeuvre Gordon the Terrible would be entirely comfortable with).
On the other hand, sticking a War Hero in political office as a useful figurehead and seeing them turn out to be less of a blockhead than might have been hoped has a fairly long history: my initial notion was that if McSweney HAD gone into politics, he probably wouldn't have risen to the very top, but he's intimidating enough to be the perfect hatchet man for a Government looking to herd scapegoats off a cliff ...

Something that has to do with a fanfiction I'm thinking of putting up in the near future.

Freedom Party Guards engaging resistance members in occupied Columbus, 1942. The Freedom Party's paramilitary were deployed to the city in a limited capacity to enforce order as well as lay down groundwork for the annihilation of the city's black population. Their despotic behavior, including public beatings, harassment of local women, and forced participation in shows of devotion to the Freedom Party and Featherston, ignited a determined resistance campaign against them as well as the Confederate Army by many city residents.

A group of partisans on the outskirts of Columbus during the winter of 1942. During the winter months, Confederate fuel and food supplies were heavily targeted by resistance members hoping to undermine the morale of the occupation force as well as deprive front line units of critical supplies.

Something else to do with my upcoming fanfic.

A group of Confederate soldiers near Columbus soon after the fall of the city. The man leading the group carries a Stovepipe rocket launcher. At this point in the war, the Confederates believed victory was only a matter of time. In their initial interactions with the locals, many of them asserted that they wouldn't stay in Columbus for more than a few months given the success of Blackbeard. "Be out before ya know it," was a phrase frequently used to convey this idea, since the Confederate soldiers believed that Smith would have no choice but to agree to Featherston's peace terms.
