Adolf Hitler (1889-1964) standing for a publicity photo in 1943

A visionary architect of the Weimar era, Herr Hitler was first well known for breathing new life into the neoclassical movement in architecture and sponsoring and patronizing neoclassical artists in music, visual arts, film, and other mediums.

During the Soviet War (1941-1948), Herr Hitler volunteered his services to the Reichswehr, adapting his civilian architectural expertise into military engineering. Hitler would sometimes end up butting heads with the officers of the Reichswehr Pioneer Battalions that he served with as a civilian auxiliary, consistently claiming to know better tactical and strategic uses for his fortifications than the Reichswehr officers did, with Hitler developing a reputation for a fierce and explosive temper over similarly minor matters. In spite of this sometimes odorous personality trait, Hitler's contributions to the war effort were considered invaluable for stopping the initially crushing and overwhelming Red Army offensive in its tracks at the Elbe, earning him the Iron Cross, 2nd Class featured in the photo; such an award was usually reserved only for actually serving members of the military, but Herr Hitler was given the medal even so due to his assistance to the Reichswehr.

After the war, Hitler's stringent anti-Communism developed into virulent anti-Semitism, with the former war hero publicly expressing claims that Jews were responsible for the rise of the Soviet Union and were the ones that ordered the Bolsheviks on their invasion of Eastern Europe. After a failed attempt at politics in the 1952 and 1954 Reichstag elections, Hitler's ostracization by the rest of German high society due to his increasingly extreme views eventually forced him to live out the rest of his life in albeit comfortable obscurity, eventually passing away in 1964 from complications due to Alzheimers at his villa just outside of Vienna; many modern scholars argue that Hitler's belligerence and hostility were early symptoms of his Alzheimers, but as this conjecture cannot be proven one way or the other, Herr Hitler's legacy in modern Germany still remains mixed and ambivalent.

Oh look, another "civilian Hitler" snippet. I hope this one's at least somewhat original.

The Kalten Krieg: Interlude 1
(1962-1963)

Ed White performs the first ever spacewalk, officially called an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity), in 1962 during the Jupiter 4 mission. White's spacewalk opened up another option for fixing satellites and parts of a spacecraft, and became another experiment to test the environment of space. He is the first person to leave a spacecraft in a specialized space suit, and the first person to be indirectly exposed to space. (Indirectly meaning that he was the first person to be exposed to space with assistance of a space suit.) His walk in orbit opened another option for experiments and another way to fix certain parts of a space ship that isn't linked from the inside.

The Germans finally achieved a First a few months after White's famed spacewalk, when Georg Grüber became the first man to perform an untethered spacewalk, without the assistance of a harness or another person. With this First, morale in Germany boosted and the German Space Agency finally getting credit after over 5 years of ridicules after failing one after another. This was the first time NASO failed to get a First.

The H-I is Japan's first domestically made launch vehicle. It was also the world's first rocket to use boosters, smaller fueled rocket engines made to support the lift off of a larger vehicle. Boosters would be used eventually to support the launch of first stage single engine rockets. Early variants were built in cooperation with various European and even American Companies, but after a while, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) would build these vehicles with funding from the Japanese Government. The Japanese Empire at first operated in the Space Race in a limited profile, but focused entirely by the beginning of the 70s, in competition with Italy.

An Earth scale model of Observer 1 , the first unmanned probe to orbit the Moon and make a soft landing on its surface. It beamed back the first photos of another celestial body, and the first pictures of Earth from beyond Earth Orbit. With this achievement, study of the Moon came into the limelight, and became one of the defining factors in the Space Race. It was launched in 1963 on a Jupiter I launch vehicle, and became the first Object to leave Earth Orbit.

Germany's Jäger 2 became the first spacecraft to take photos of the far side of the Moon. While not as spectacular as the multi achieving Observer 1 of the Americans and the pictures it returned were poor by today's standards, it stirred excitement within the scientific community about studying the far side, and the first (tentative) map of the far side of the Moon was published by the German Space Magazine when the pictures were improved by photographic processing
. There was a previous attempted launch, Jäger 1, but this one went off course and shot pass the Moon.

AMC Concept Cars - The Return Of AMC!
It's The Biggest Story Of The Year, And No One Saw It Coming.

No, these concepts are not in the works and AMC is not on its way back to the streets, so don't get your checkbook out quite yet 'cause HOT ROD and Steve Stanford are just jacking with you. This story created such a huge buzz, especially with you AMC fans out there, that we put it up here so even more of you can take a look.

Dateline: Kenosha, Wisconsin: It has been revealed that American Motors will return as a full-line, full-service car company to do battle with the domestics and imports in the highly competitive North American marketplace. Complete details of this shocking news story remain sketchy, but leave it to HOT ROD magazine to dig deep beneath the surface to unearth all kinds of surprises for anyone who digs cars. Sometimes a scoop just falls into your lap.

Let's start at the beginning. Roughly 10 years ago, a multimillionaire vintage AMC enthusiast tried to acquire one of the six remaining AMX/3 mid-engine prototype sports cars for his personal collection. He was told none were for sale at any price, so our mystery mogul decided to do the next best thing-he built his own. In the course of designing, drawing up blueprints, and interviewing potential shops to build his dream, the plan changed from a copy of an AMX/3 to a totally new, updated modern AMX/4. With strong European exotic influences, this would be an AMC like no other.

With the new Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro coming out, we've got the ponycar wars all over again, so it makes sense to reintroduce the Javelin and AMX and provide yet another marketplace alternative. AMC has big plans also for the Javelin as a platform for all sorts of racing efforts. The real news on the street, however, is the first-ever Javelin convertible. As to the powertrain for the Javelin and AMX, refer to the text. An independent rearend is an option in both cars.>>>>>>

Here's where things get interesting. In sensing a potential market for this new sports/GT with other enthusiasts, the idea was hatched to build these cars in series. Then the discussion turned to, "You know, wouldn't it be cool to bring back the whole company instead of just one AMC model? How wild would it be to build a new Javelin or AMX to go head to head with the new Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang? And how about a totally new Ambassador to compete with Cadillac or Lexus?

Our sources go on to reveal that the new American Motors will place a strong emphasis on cars that enthusiasts will want to not just own, but cherish: quality above all else, fun to drive, fast, fuel-efficient, and with great styling from the recently opened West Coast advanced-styling studio in Irvine, California. Of particular interest to HOT ROD readers is the news of a full-scale racing program to encompass NASCAR, drag racing, IMSA, and even off-road. Reportedly, a highly modified Javelin will make an assault on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb this July. A later run-possibly in 2010-at the Baja 1000 will celebrate the '67 Baja run of Spence Murray and Ralph Poole in a virtually stock Rambler.
