Context: As part of a deal with Columbia Pictures, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Britt Allcroft placed David Mitton in charge of a music adaptation of Thomas the Tank Engine. Meanwhile, Jeffery Katzenberg worked on Universal Animation's The Eleven Swans, yet another riff on Warner Bros' 1998 film Shrek. However, the Shrek formula had worn its welcome, and Thomas quickly beat the big-budget film. What also helped was Disney's lack of a big release for that year.
