screengrab from the "Mass Effect Remastered" trilogy. When the Mass Effect trilogy came to an end in 2014, it was widely praised for innovative gameplay, branching paths where choices mattered (such as if Commander Shepard would ultimately survive the trilogy, based on then seemingly minor choices throughout all three games) and the ability to carry over characters by importing savegames from the previous entries.
The second and third entries were severely delayed. Officially, because the failed EA buyout left Bioware struggling for funds (which, while true, was resolved with a partial non-controlling buyout by AMD via their Canadian ATI subsidiary) but in 2018, interviews revealed that there were internal divisions over the direction of the story. In the end, Mass Effect 2 and 3 were both praised for their writing, putting aside fears of an unsatisfying resolution and ending after so long in development hell ala Duke Nukem Forever.
All three games won awards by an adoring press, and accolades by fans.
The Mass Effect trilogy was remastered to "tide fans over" until the release of Mass Effect Andromeda, the hotly anticipated sequel/spinnoff, scheduled for Q2 2022.
* Why no, I'm totally not still salty about the ME3 ending. Whatever gave you that idea?
