Gran Sultan Abdulmejid II (Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy, 30 May 1868 - Paris, France, 23 August 1944), 37th and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
Abdulmejid II was the 37th and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 16 May 1926 until 1 August 1944, when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved after the Turkish Civil War and replaced by the Sultanate of Turkey.
Most historians agree that when he came to power it was too late to save the crumbling empire: both his predecessors (Mehmed V and Mehmed VI) had done almost nothing to solve the empire's economic and social problems.
The Economic Crisis of 1932 proved to be the last nail in the Ottomans' coffin, the very fragile Turkish economy collapsed, and the dictatorial CUP government was terribly ineffective in finding a solution to the crisis, in September 1936 a coup d'état led by the Turkish Youth started the Turkish Revolution, the Empire was divided between the Government of Constantinople (aligned with the CUP and the sultan) and the Government of Ankara (Controlled by the young Turks), in January 1937 a massive Arab revolt broke out in Hejaz , followed by a Kurdish revolt breaking out in June 1938, seeing the Ottomans' fragile situation, Russia invaded the northeastern region of the empire, followed by Greece and Bulgaria in 1939.
In July 1944, the war finally came to an end with the humiliating Peace of Ankara, the Ottoman Empire lost most of its territories, and was now converted into a Sultanate ruled by the Young Turks, a few days after the signing of the peace treaty. , Abdulmejid II was deposed on 1 August, forced to abdicate in favor of Osman IV, on 23 August 1944, the old sultan died in exile in Paris at the age of 76.
