Philippine WI: Arroyo declares martial law in '06

In 2006 the usual suspects in the Philippine military staged a comic-opera "coup" which abruptly fizzled. WI GMA had used the opportunity to declare martial law for a limited period? Keep in mind this is a defanged version compared to the "God-Emperor" powers under the old 1935 Constitution that Ferdie appropriated in 1972.

The tae hits the proverbial ventilador, so to speak. You think the clashes between students and police were bad? Try that with Philippine Marines with automatic rifles, plus students who actually have "evidence" of GMA being Marcos, Mk. II. The trade unions go on strike, the Church starts making threatening noises on Veritas... yeah, La Gloria has little to gain and everything to lose under the 2006 situation.

Like Marcos, she'd be betting on US support. With Bush in office she'd probably get it, but as you said there's little point. Term extension- her real goal- is much easier accomplished through Cha-Cha under legal methods such as a Congressional vote, referendum or SC ruling.

OTOH, historically Philippine governments have only survived if they have the backing of the Church, the military and the Americans. Given the Church would balk at martial law, and that the military, fresh from trying to overthrow the government, isn't exactly behind the President, Gloria by that point is merely setting the departure time for the first flight to Hawaii...
