Well I realized that after so physical distance probably has no bearing... I mean' t distant possibility in that he has his own trouble with Sweden reasserting itself to become embroiled in trying to preserve Margaret's inheritance. Or are you suggesting that he may be more amenable to Swedish demands and focus his efforts on Germany and the Netherlands. Its not like D/N does not have some amount of power and influence. Such a combination is likely to make Austria proper though itself the outlier in that combination. Can he get himself elected Emporer in this case, would he even want to? Denmark/Norway/Burgundian Netherlands would prove a very powerful naval foe and probably could stand off the French in the south if need be. Just were would the Swedish subjects fit...could it revitalize the Union of Kalmar.
I assume the new Danish centred Empire would still turn protestant. Indeed could we not see greater influence for protestantism in Germany down the road and a Catholic church forced to compromise more instead of branding Luther in the same vein as Huss.
there will still be France of course...Avizian Spain ...Poland/Lithuania and Bohemia/Hungary( if it survives and doesn't succumb to Protestantism itself)
It was actually more of an aside - that he did in fact marry into the family!
At this time the Danish King was by some in Europe wieved as a major Monarch even if on the down slope. He did after all rule the Kalmar Union until 1521.
He did not only have a grudge against the Swedes, nowadays his beheading of the Swedish nobility is as much seen as a clear message to the Danish nobility that he did not go along with easily. He tried promoting the merchants on the behalf of the nobility or rather to outmanouevre the nobility in which he failed and was driven off.
And he did convert to protestantism.
But the dowry might just have changed that! Maximilian never paid the 250.000 guilders.
Or they could have been the carrot to entice Christian into support the Emperors cause.
He would anyway have been forced to make something about his kingdoms. Question is time.
At 1506/7 Christian was still the heir to the Kingdom, John (Hans) living till 1513. Apparently the Danish nobility was supporting him in his early years.
So an early marriage to Margaret would place him as consort or Emperor? and then he'd inherit his paternal lands 1513 if they'd not choose Frederick his cousin! Which might serve to complicate matters and then perhaps not.
If he was to remain King of Denmark-Norway he in TTL just might, being in the bigger picture have to rely more on his Danish nobility not alienating himself to them and then still fight the Swedes but not behead their nobility getting some settlement with the part still loyal to the Union.
If Christian become Emperor he might still be enticeable to protestantism and then again he might not! But perhaps he would be more openminded so that we'd end up with a mixed Catholic/Protestant Empire.
