Philip IV "the Fair" captured during the battle of Mons-en-Pévèle

Although the battle of Mons-en-Pévèle was a french victory, there was a moment in the battle in which the french king was almost captured or killed by the flemish rebels. He was wounded and his horse killed, and only scaped because some knights around him covered his flight. But what if the flemish had captured the french king? What consecuences would it have had for France, Flanders and Europe? An important fact is that at the time of the battle (18 August 1304), the cardinals were in the conclave that a year later would elect pope Clement V.

Weird. I just read about him for the first time this morning.

Off the top of my head, that would probably result in reduced power in the monarchy to the benefit of the grand seigneurs, with the lords of Flanders in particular benefitting.

It could easily go otherwise, though, as Philip might feel obliged to reassert his power in another round, or the counts might let it go to their heads and try for a lot more.

In either case there's a fair chance that Philip would lose some of the security of position that allowed him to pull off his trick with the Templars (and the French Jews, for that matter) to such thorough success. He might make the attempt later due to weakness, earlier due to being further in debt to them, or not at all. And he's likely to have more problems with the attempt regardless.

If the whole Templars fiasco doesn't come off, that actually has dramatic implications for late medieval Europe, as it inspired and served as legal precedent for witch trials, persecution of heretics on trumped up charges, and a fair portion of the inquisition's antics.

And what would happen with the papal conclave that in this moment were being held in Perugia and that would eventually elect the french pope Clement V, the first pope of Avignon? With Philip defeated and captured, would the cardinals elect a different pope, maybe a pope hostile to France and Philip IV for the outrag of Anagni to Boniface VIII? I am thinking in the cardinal Matteo Rosso (or Rubeo) Orsini, or somebody of his party.
