Pharaoh Sisi: Arab Winter Alternate Timeline

Intro

In the spring of 2014, General Abdel Fattah el Sisi was riding high as the most powerful man in Egypt. Having overthrown the unpopular government of President Mohammed Morsi, he was lauded as the savior of the Egyptian people. He enjoyed an unprecedented level of support not seen since the days of Nasser. Many hoped Sisi’s rule would assure a new era of peace and prosperity. These happy predictions however would soon be crushed by dangers lurking just around the corner.

The situation on Egypt’s western border had gone from bad to worse. Libya had descended into a state of total chaos since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. This instability provided an opening for revolutionaries seeking to overthrow the Egyptian state. In the summer of 2013 these men form the so called “Free Egyptian Army” (FEA) in Libya with the intent of one day claiming Egypt. Nurtured by friendly governments in Algeria, Turkey and Qatar the movement was provided safe havens, funding and weapons. The FEA eventually grew into a fighting force of over 3,000 men.

General el Sisi and the Egyptian government were slow to respond to this growing danger. Egypt had been through a lot over the past few years. The crackdown on Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood along with the growing Al Qaeda presence in the Sinai had been their primary concerns. Sisi himself brushed off the dangers posed of FEA. The general was much more focused on solidifying his position in Egyptian society and winning the Presidential election slated for late May, 2014. To most Egyptians the events in Libya were far from their thoughts.
