Petain goes into retirement after the June 22 Armistice

Could Petain decide to go into retirement after the June 22 Armistice with Germany.

Who would take his position in the Vichy government

What would he do in retirement and what would be the impact on his health

How would this impact his legacy

Wasn't he a key figure in the armistice and later Vichy Regime? How would his retirement straight after help France? It will show weakness, destabilise the government and increase influence from most likely the Germans. Petain wouldn't do that, he did what he did and had to stand by it, not sneak away. I mean, he had plans for what was left of France didn't he?

In France Fights On the authors "retired" him - via a stroke. He actually blew an aneurysm the night after the council in Tours were France decided to stay in the war. And he dies the next November.
