Peshawar Lancers Redux: North America

The Nationalist/Republican Ticket for 1952 was Dwight D Eisenhower for President and William Frederick Mosby for Vice President while the Democrat chose Robert M Lafollete Jr for President and Adali Stevenson for Vice President.
Both Ike and Lafollette are good choices for President, though Lafollette, if he wins and gets a friendly Congress, may get to do more lasting reforms with a positive impact on the life of TTL average US citizen.

The former Commander of US forces in Kurdistan and Army Chief of Staff was well known to the American public and most people had a positive response. His running mate was well known to the people of California. His Grandfather had been a Confederate Civil War hero and he was a hero of the war against the Mexican Dictator. William had attended public school in California but had also gone back east to attend VMI. He had graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with out standing grades and had been offered a regular Commission in the US Army. He had served for 5 years and returned to California where he had joined the National Guard. He had served in Kurdistan and was elected to Congress. He served 8 years before running for Governor as the Nationalist Party Candidate.
Governor Moseby was selected to be Vice President to Balance the Ticket.

Mr Lafollete condemned US intervention and promised to removed US forces. President Taft condemned the Democrat Nominee for his irresponsible statements and ordered an end to briefing of the man. The Kurdish Ambassador responded to the Democrats position by pointing out that the agression was by the Turkish state crossing the internastionally recognized borders of Kurdistan.

A congressional resolution passed the House 300 to 12 and the Senate 80 to 12 authoring the President to use what ever force was necessary. The US now asked the British government for the use of Naval and air bases on Cyprus. The Secretary of Defense issued orders calling up the Marine reservist and for the deployment of the 10th Mountain, 1st Armored, 36th Infantry Division (Texas NG) plus additional support units.

The election was held and Dwight D Eisenhower was elected as President. The Nationalist gained seats in the Senate and House restoring a comfortable majority

President Eisenhower announced the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty and the setting up of NATO. The US was joining Canada, Great Britain, Belgium Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Austrian Empire Portugal and Brazil in the alliance.

The Kingdom of Denmark and the Kingdom of Norway both applied to join NATO. President Eisenhower continued with the American Highway Construction Program. The Administration and the Congress were looking at what remained to be done in the recovery from THE FALL. The United States population was slowly growing hitting 84million in 1953.

Work had begun on the construction of the first American Nuclear Submarine the USS Nautilus at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, CT

The Eisenhower Administration was determined to complete the last of the major projects remaining from the reconstruction of the United States with regard to The Fall. A lot of work had been done and a great deal of Florida had been reconnected thanks to the largest reconstruction project ever attempted. The Eisenhower Administration was going to carry out the final plan.. Huge amounts of stone from New England combined with Millions of tons of concrete would reunite Florida. While it would not be the same as it was before it would be better than it was.

The President's trip to Europe went exceedingly well. He had a serious conversation wit Prime Minister Churchill and Kaiser Otto I. There were agreements signed with all of the leaders of the countries that he visited. Portugal signed an agreement with the US allowing the US the right to establish an air base in the Azores.

The Eisenhower Administration now turned its attention to the Pacific. The US spoke with the government of the Kingdom of Hawaii about the possibility of allowing the US to share facilities on Guam. Talks began but there was immediate opposition by the Social Democrats and some Liberal Democrats also opposed the idea. However the leader of the Liberal Democrats in the house said that the party would take no position until it heard the proposal.
The Government of the Republic of the Philippines offered the US bases in that country subject to a final agreement.

The Eisenhower Administration submitted the agreement to both the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. After hearings it was approved by both Committees and then went to the Full US Senate. Currently there were 46 states. The Dakotas were combined as a state and Montana ,Wyoming,Idaho and Alaska were all territories lacking enough population to be restored to statehood. Thus there were 92 Senators to vote on the treaty. The vote was 60 in favor and 30 opposed and 2 were absent.
The agreement was approved.

Within a couple of decades, it might be possible to have enough population on those territories to make them states again and in the case of Alaska, to narrowly make it a state.

The 1956 election saw President Eisenhower re-elected to another term. America;s population was slowly growing but at a more rapid pace.
There was little doubt that that sever of the former states might once again have enough population to once again become states.

No sooner was the election over than a young Democrat Congressman from Massachusetts announce that he would be running for the US Senate from that state. Rep John F Kennedy was ready for the next step. His older brother had stayed in the Air Force rejecting a political career for a military one. It had lead to a bitter argument with his father

1963 President Mosby was getting ready to announce he and Vice President Lodge would seek a secong term. Sennator John F Kennedy D-Ma had announced that he would seek the nomination of his party. He had just been re-elected to the Senate in 1962.. The President had dispatched his Secretary of State to London for a meeting with the British and Hawaiians on the economy.

Both the Hawaiian Prime Minister and the American President were concern that the economy might become a political as well as an economic problem. The President was moving to deregulate in those areas where it made sense and proposed tax cuts for investments in businesses that might result in more jobs. Hawaii and the US had signed a defense agreement which would actually result in increased production of weapons to be used by both countries. Boeing got a contract to produce the all jet engine B-47 bomber for the United States Air Force and Hawaii had agreed to purchase 54 og the same bombers for its air forces.

President Mosby was proposing tax cuts for companies that invested in modernizing their plants and increasing jobs. The USAF order for the B-47 along with the Royal Hawaiian Air Force thus increasing the amount of jobs.
