Peshawar Lancers Redux: North America

Claudius did an outstanding job on telling the story of what had happen in the United States as a result of The Fall and I have at this no point see little point in trying to say anything about the US. But there is also Canada. The Fall had an enormous impact on this land to the north. The Canadian Government quickly came to realize that the Impact of The Fall could very well wipe out Canada. The Canadian Government moved as fast as it could to evacuate the population from the East to Canada's far West. From there it could be moved to Australia or other lands which would be willing to accept the population.
A major effort was made to remove the population before the temperatures dropped to low and proceeded to freeze everything. The Canadian Army/ Militia used force and made an all out effort to keep the trains to the west going. Unfortunately, not everyone obeyed Martial Law Orders and as a result people died. Some fled southward into the US where there were problems that seemed to only grow.
By the time it was all over the Canadian Government and its population existed only in the Vancouver region.

The damage to Eastern Canada was not as bad as that which hit the east coast of the United States but there was damage. The Great freeze hit the Great Lake region and there was massive mounts of freezing. The ice was thick enough that one could walk. Since summer was not really all that warm there was little threat of a thaw. Contact between the west coast of Canada and the rest of the country disappeared with a lot of slides and avalanches. Thus for the rest of the 1870s the struggle was to survive. It wasn't until the mid 1880s and latter that the Hawaiians together with the Canadian government began to try to find out what was going on.

It was not until the late 1880s that the Hawaiian Challenge began to explore eastern Canada and set up a base at the site of the old French Fortress Louisbourg. The Hawaiian Challenge had also charted the new east coast of the United States.

The establishment of the Fort Louibourg Base by the Hawaiians marked the first step in a long road toward the rebuilding of Canada. Gradually over the next 30 years conditions would improve and the climate begin tio return to a more normal one. But it was the establishment of the base and the knowledge gained in exploration that would move thing forward. Information was that the ice shield existed north og Newfoundland and that it stretched northward and eastward.

The Fort Louisbourg site was seeing a lot of improvements to the old French Fortress Complex. Not far from it a landing field and hanger was built for one of Hawaii's new Navy Zeppelins. There was an electric generator, small hospital. barracks, scientific labs and a photo processing lab. There was a dry dock and facilities capable of repairing any damage. The current population of the facility was 120 year long residents.

The Hawaiian Challenge located Canadian citizens who had for one reason or another missed the evacuation. The Hawaiian Challenge provided medical care and n examination of the area that they lived in. One couple were charged with Cannibalism and were tried by a military tribunal and hung. Still it was found to be an isolated case. A number of survivors were relocated to the Fort Louisburg area.

Until either the Canal was completed and or the weather change closer to the normal there would not be any large scale effort to rebuild Eastern Canada. In 1891 Halifax would come back into being as more of the survivors would opt to settle there rather than Fort Louisbourg. Still the fort would have somethings that Halifax would not have : 1) Modern Hospital, 2) a ship repair facility, 3) an airship landing facility and 4) capacity to manufacture tools.

Despite everything Fort Louisbourg continued to grow. Warehouses were built and the population was growing . The Canadian Government set up a court room and had a judge, clerks and several members of the RCMP stationed at the Fort. The Facility had military personnel there as well to provide security.

The former French fortress had seen a lot of growth and during the late spring and summer it was humming with activity. The Hawaiians used the airfield that had been established there to fly missions over Canaada checking the ice cap in Eastern and Northern Canada as well as taking lots of photos. It also flew supplies to Iceland and Halifax.. Even during the Fall and Winter there was activity at the fort. Stores had open and jobs created. The forts population began to increase to the point that nearly 500 people lived there year round with more during the warm weather.

Captain William Peters Royal Hawaiian Navy was the man chosen to be the base commander> He had served aboard a warship but for the past 6 years he had served in a variety of administrative post. He had briefly served on the command that had completed the overhaul of the Hawaiian Challenge. He was a graduate of the Naval Academy and his father had come to the islands from Denmark. He had earned a degree in engineering from the Royal College of Hawaii and also held a Masters Degree from the University of Hawaii in Public Administration. The Captain had been briefed by both the Navy and the Canadian Government.

Captain Peters was expecting the Hawaiian Challenge back from its 2nd European expedition. He had already received supplies that had been shipped by a Jamaican freighter and some special supplies had been delivered by the The Royal Hawaiian Air Service. He had also begun to set up defenses for the base. There had been talk of some Piracy in the area and if that was true then he could expect a Royal Hawaiian warship to be stationed at his base.

Being installed at fort Louisbourg were to be two of the newest designed 12 inch breech loading guns. The guns had been designed by the Hawaiian Naval Arms Corporation and were said to be capable of firing out to 24,0000 yards. The gun was capable of reaching out to 27,500 yards according to experts but no ship could see that far.

By the start of the Fall the guns were put in there emplacements thus insuring the security of the base. This would be Captain Peters first winter at the Fortress and with all of the improvements it will not be as bad as those who were there in the beginning. Now there was heating, indoor plumbing and lightiing.
