Peshawar Lancers Redux: North America

With reconstruction making progress in Canada and the weather continuing to improve more Canadians were moving from the Vancouver region to other parts of Canada especially after the eruption in Alaska.

Ottawa, Canada The government of Canada had officially returned to the capital of Canada. The Canadian Government also had established a Canadian Agency to Monitor the weather and prepare the nation for possible disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes erupting. There was a meetting between the the Canadian Government Agency and the Hawaiian one

President Roosevelt was discovering how badly the Fall and wars had set the United States back in development. Reconstruction had made progress in the east But the population was far below were it might have been if there had not been The Fall. A lot of the country was underpopulated. There were few people in states or what would have been states in another time. The Territories of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona were all under populated as were the states of Michigan, Minn, Wisconsin,Nebraska, Illinois, NH, VT.

The President wanted a complete Census of the United States taken. It would gove the government a better idea as to the exact population of the country. The last attempt was started in 1890 but never completed. Upon assuming office in 1901 the President ordered it begun. Estimates were that the population was somewhere between 45 million and perhaps 55 million. The bulk of the population appeared to be in the South. The next most populaces area was California. New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio had seen growth. The population of Maine was put at 125, Vermont 92, New Hampshire 225, MA-790, RI-674, Connecticut 900, New York-42,327, PA 27,678, Ohio-9100, IL-109, IN-3,000,

States which had a considerable population were all in the South. Virginia had a population of 1,325,000, North Carolina 1,780ooo, South Carolina 1,250,000, Georgia 3,478,000. Alabama 1,300,000, Mississippi 1,450,000, La\975,000, Tenn, 4,000,000, Kentucky 2,400,000, Arkansas 250,000, Missouri 4,000,000, Kansas 250,000, Iowa 20,000, Texas- 6,789,000, Nevada 125,000, California 5,245,000.

It makes sense that most people are in places with better climates. A reversal of this will take a full reversal of the the fall and then almost an average lifespan (due to the need to rebuild most things).

For many it would take at least another 3 decades before there would be enough stabilization of climate and reconstruction to see a lot of states begin to regain population. President Roosevelt was deeply concern over this matter. He had continued to rebuild bridges, roads and rail connections but there was some doubt as to whether the population of some states would ever climb back to the heights that it had once been. There was also the belief that The West might remain underpopulated in the territories of the Dakotas, Idaho, Wyoming , Washington, Oregon and elsewhere. The American President had meeting with Scientist who expressed concern about Volcanoes and earthquakes. Still it was what was to take place in 1906 that would send shock waves through the US.

The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 was the greatest natural disaster that the United States had suffered since the Fall. The President sent Federal troops into the area as soon as things settled down. The President appealed for aid for the city. Hawaiia sent shiploads of aid and special engineers. The Royal Hawaiian Geological Agency sent personnel to study what had happen.

The Hawaiian Prime Minister was awed by the devastation that San Francisco had taken. Hawaiian Army Engineers were assisting the US Army and local volunteers in attempting to restore some kind of service. The Prime Minister and the American President pledged to work together. Both talked with the experts who said that after shock appeared to be continuing but did not believe that another super quake was likely. Still earthquake prediction was in its infancy. It would be decades before progress might be made.

The Hawaiian Delegation was warmly greeted by the American President and the people of California. Hawaii once again supplied aid and assistance in keeping with its past efforts to save people. The King expressed a desire to visit the US and see for himself what was being done.

So far the beginning of the 20th Century had seen a lot of Volcanic and earthquake activity. The RHGA was recording all of this and was comparing it with past activity. Because technology was behind what it would become it was a very time comsuming process.

1907 President T Roosevelt vissited Ottawa and had lunch with the Canadian Prime Minister and the Governor General. Both countries were working hard to recover from the Fall. After Addressing the Canadian Parliament the President travelled by train ti New York City where he would meet with the Hawaiian Prime Minister. The Prime Minister would be staying in New York for just three days and then would leave for a summer vacation in Ireland.

The American President met with the Hawaiian Prime Minister and awarded him the Congressional Medal of Freedom for all of the Help that he had given to the US. Also was an award to the Hawaiian King for the acts of Kindness and compassion that he and his family had shown the American people in their hour of need. The President was clear that the award was to not only the present King but to those that had come before. Hawaii had prove that it was a friend who cared about people and would act when others feared to. America had been honored to be that country that Hawaii had reached out to.

Teddy was nearing the end of his second term as President and while there was some pressure for him to run for a third term he was leaning in the direction of allowing someone else to lead the nation for at least the next 4 years. He had seen a lot of things happen during his life and to some extent he yearned to rest and enjoy life.
