President Pershing had a long private talk with Vice President Calvin Coolidge. The President set up the agenda for the rest of his second term. He also seriously asked the Vice President to consider running for President in 1924. The Vice President was cool to the idea of running for President. He told him that he better warm up to the idea because he was the best man for the job. Governor Alfred E Smith of New York was the leader of the New Democrats and considered to be a possible candidate for the high office. He had been all over the Empire State promoting reconstruction of the state.
