Peshawar Lancers Redux: Latin America

The Confederation of Sonora had now began expanding its Security forces. The First Brigade was deployed to serve with the Neuva Granada Peacekeepers. It consisted of 3 Infantry Battalions,1 Artillery Battalion,1 company of engineers and 1 company of M-60A3 tanks and the Second Brigade consisted of 3 Infantry Battalions,1 Artillery Company,1 company of Engineers and 2 companies of M-60A3 served with the Brazilians.

The Allied forces North of the border began to fortify the border Allied Engineers began building defensive positions at key site along the border. Two additional battalions of Neuva Granada Army Engineers arrived to assist in the Construction.Barbed wire,Tank obstacles and mine fields needed to be installed. The US Navy began to patrol the coastal waters and a Naval unit was to be crated for the Sonoran Navy

The Border had seen clashes between the Peacekeepers and the Mexicans who were attempting to infiltrate into Confederation territory.Confederation outpost had com under attack and the Brazilian and Neuva Graniadan troops had responded with troops and Artillery support
The US had agreed to supply additional military equipment and training.

The United States began carrying out joint exercises with the Mayan Confederations. The result was increased US aid and the training of Mayan pilots by the US. The Mayan Government offered to lease a Naval base to the US

President Longstreet met with Mexican President Gomez in Havana Cuba. They discussed the Issue of Sonora and relations between the US and Mexico. The American President made it clear that the US had only done what it had after the failure of the previous Mexican Government to act to deal with the problem. He further stated that the US had intended to withdraw but when the people of Sonora expressed no desire to return to being a part of Mexico it created a problem. He was not about to allow a war to take place. Further he explained that he would not allow Mexico to gain weapons which might strike the US or destabilize the region

The President sent a request to the congress for 250 million dollars in military aid and 750million in economic assistance to the Confederation of Sonora. The US had seized nearly a billion dollars in drug money during the occupation into Northern Mexico and had turned over 150 million dollars to the government of the Confederation of Sonora. So the cost to the US taxpayers was about zero. The US was training the Sonoran Army and Air Force. 24 refurbished F-16s were to equip its air Force. The USAF helped to set up an early warning Radar system.

President Gomez had been trying to get his government out of the mess that it was in. Missteps had alienated two of the largest powers in Latin America. The Mayan Confederation had long been at odds with Mexico and it had once again supported the US and sympathized with Sonora. The Central American Republic was also unhappy with Mexico and that distrust and dislike ran deep going back to the days of the dictatorship.
Indeed Cuba and Argentina were two nations that were friendly. It was in Cuba that he had his face to face meeting with the American President. The American leader made it clear that he would not tolerate a war to reunite Mexico. He had found that a lot of the European powers refused to sell Mexico weapons because of American Objections.
He turned to the Russians who would sell him jet fighters, tanks and artillery but not missile that might threaten the US

The Confederation of Sonora had received 156 M-60A3 tanks from the US and the Kingdom of Israel had upgraded them with a new turret and gun, better armor and a new engine. The tank was armed with a 120mm gun and was capable of taking on any tank that the government of Mexico might have. Sonora was requesting another 108 M-60 tanks that could be up graded and the Longstreet Administration had approved it and sent the bill to Congress for approval.

President Longstreet was concern at the arms race taking place between Mexico and Sonora. Sonora did not have the money to continue to buy arms and the arms race was draining Mexico of resources that would be better spent on nonmilitary spending. Sonora had so far receive surplus American military equipment which was upgraded by countrie such as the Kingdom of Israel for a fraction of the cost of modern stuff. A US envoy met with the Mexican leader and he became aware of how much the arms race had drained Mexico. Caught between the Generals and a population that wanted change he took a risk and cancelled another order for T-90 tanks buying 60 T-72 refurbished tanks instead.

The Mayan Confederation had a small army which consisted of 6 active Infantry battalions and 3 reserve Infantry Battalions, 2 Special Forces Battalionswith one being active and 1 Reserve, 1 artillery bn with 1 Battery of 6x 155mm and 2 Batteries of 105mm gun (each battery of 6 guns), 1 armored Company with 18 M-48A5. 1 Company of Engineers. The Air Force had 18 Huey Helicopters,6 Cobra Gunships and 9xF-16C.

A US Marine Expeditionary force of 1,800 men landed in the Mayan Confederation and was joined by another 1,600 Marines two days latter. It was joined by 9 F/A-18 Hornets flown by Marines and a 600 man unit of SEABEEs. The US set up an improved Radar System and the US Army deployed a Patriot ADS to the country.

Neuva Granadian Marines landed in Southern Mexico where insurgents had taken up arms against the Government. The area had been independent from Mexico for 25 years before rejoining Mexico after the Spanish-Neuva Granada war of Liberation. The Marines were able to quickly gain control of the area and disarm the Mexican Army foces in the region.. US-Mayan and Brazillian forcess moved across the border and quickly took control of the region near the Mayan border.

The Collapse of Mexico was fairly quick as a result of the air campaign . Neuva Granadan army units entered Mexico City with support from US army forces. The Mexican Army was disarmed and the Police force was being screened. The US thought it best to request Peace keepers from Spain, Italy Greece,Peru, Chile so that the allies could be withdrawn.

Insurgent Groups which attempted to form were crushed by allies in Mexico. Spain agreed to send 4,500 peacekeepers and was joined by Chile which also sent 4,500. Italy agreed to send 4,500. Peru offered to send 1,500 Police officers. Greece declined to send any forces but was replaced by Canada which sent 3,000 troops and 1,500 Police.

Cuba agreed to join the Peace Keepers along with Jamaica. Both countries would be sending 3,500 personnel each. A commission would look at the question of border and would settle the matter. Elections were to be held in 12 months and would be Monitored by the Terran Nations Council.

Brazil and Neuva Granada had begun to pull forces out of Sonora. Brazil was keeping a small military mission in Sonora to help train the Sonoran military to handlethe new tanks and IFVs that had been purchased from Brazil. Brazil had been keeping a Marine Brigade in the Mayan Confederation but was expected to shrink the force down to a battalion.

Spain was asking its fellow members of the Peacekeepers force to send additional forces to Mexico Italy sent an additional 1,800 people and Canada 2,500 and finally Chile and Spain sent 1,500 men. This was an attempt to stabilize the situtation and thus allow the election for the new Mexican Congress.

France next approached Pedro Retrogress who was Spain's Director Of Mexican Operations with an offer to send 6,500 Military and 3,500 Police to assist with the Peace Keeping Mission in Mexico. It hoped that with this large reinforcement of personnel more progress could be made and Mexico could be ready to return to ruling itself The director was also seeking money from countries to repair damage inflicted by the conflict. The US offered to contribute 125 million dollars if other nations would together meet that amount.
