Peshawar Lancers Redux: Latin America

The Ar gentian capital was rocked by the sound of gunfire. Plane from the Navy bombed the barracks of the army in the capital. The US Ambassador sent the following message to the US: Coup taking place in Argentina. It appears that the people an certain elements of the military are tired of the direction the country is headed. Army Barrack where Capital division is station has been bombed by aircraft belonging to the Navy. Reports of fighting elsewhere in the country.

Fighting did not die down in Argentina. The Military Government was determined to retain power. Yet for the first time the coupist had support within the military establishment. The Army attempted to seize control of the naval bases but the Navy resisted with warships firing on army units.

The Civil War in Argentina continued as the people who had staged the coup refused to give up. The Navy and some elements of the Air Force had supported the coup but most of the Army were against it and were determined to put it down. The governments of Brazil,Chile and Bolivia were all sympathic to the coupist who wanted a restoration of a democratically elected government. Paraguay openly intervened with its military to support the rebels.

The Argentinean Army responded to the intervention by Paraguay with armored forces and artillery. Several Argentinean Air Force Mirage III Fighter Bombers struck the enemy forces. The US, France and German urged talks between the two sides.

The Military Government of Argentina met with their opponents in Chile. After 5 days of talks the Chileans and Brazilians had manage to get the two sides to agree to a cease fire. There would be new elections and both sides agreed to Judge Juan dela Vega becoming the acting President. The Army Chief of Staff resigned.

New Elections were to take place in Argentina in 4 months. A new constitution was drawn up and observers came from the US, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil and Canada. The Argentinean Military saw a lot of old officers purged from its ranks. Judge Juan dela Vega stepped down as acting President after the election and went into retirement.Jorge Castillo was elected as the new President he was a businessman and a known reformer

President Castillo pushed to improve relations with Britain and moved the Argentinean Congress to pass a law dropping all claims to the Falkland Islands. The President wanted to end the claim so that it could never be used again.

Cancelled by Argentina were arms purchases from Russia. Instead it turned to France and Germany Purchasing the Mirage 2000 fighter and two submarines from Germany plus 2 Frigates from Germany.

Britain was glad that Argentina was no longer a threat to the Falkland Islands. Oil exploration had begun in the area and a strike was made. A Brazilian Refinery would process the oil for the Latin American Market.

Mexico City,Mexico: The Mexican President was under pressure from the American President to stamp out the criminal elements that was causing problems along the border with the United States. The Americans had offered to help but the failure to stamp out the problem before it got out of control had reached a point that President Longstreet was sensuously thinking of using the American Military to resolve the problem.

Mexico's President found that his country had been invaded by the United States but as he turned to other Latin American Nations he found that for the most part there was little sympathy for Mexico. Neuva Granada's Ambassador pointed out that the US had urged action and had offered to work with Mexico to solve the Problem. The Central American Republic also did not desire to become involved. Brazil offered to mediate a resolution to the conflict. In Mexico City the opposition was demanding the resignation of the President and an explanation from the Prime Minister as to how this mess came about.
The USAF warned the Mexican Air Force not to cross into a no fly zone in Northern Mexico. When several Mexican fighters entered the Zone they were shot down fy USAF F-15s. Several areas were bombed by the USAF using precision guided weapons. Mexican Army units that attempted to engage the US forces were taken out.

In Neuva Granada the Foreign Minister had a long conversation with the Mexican Ambassador explaining that Mexico had better realize that the United States could have easily destroyed Mexico but was doing the job that the Mexican Government should have. The corruption in the Northern region was to the point that the criminals were nearly ready to take over. The Americans were rooting out the corruption and unless something stupid happen would leave after the job was done.

Mexican Senator Thomas Gomez demanded that the Mexican President resign and that there be a special election to replace him. The US Military had reached a line and stopped any further advance into Mexico> The US was monitoring the area to insure that there was no infiltration of insurgents. The US Military was moving to resore an elected government in the Mexican stated that it controlled. It was screening the police force and other government personnel. Corrupt officals were arrested and in US Military custody. No decision had been made as to when the US would withdraw leading to much speculation.

The US Military turned the first group of check points over to the Mexican National Guard of the Northern States. They had been trained and equipped by the US Army. Among the equipment provided were 30 M-113 APC 30cal MG,50cal Mg, M-16 rifles, There was currently a proposal to seperate the Northen Mexican Stated from Mexico and create a buffer zone.

The Governor's of Northern Mexico elected representatives to talk with the US Government on behalf og the people of the Confederation of Northern Mexican States.
The no longer wanted to be part of a corrupt Mexico.

The Federal Government in Mexico City was quite upset with the Break away states. While the man who was to become the new President was talking with the Americans the Mexican Army was preparing to move into the Northern States and restore the authority of the Mexican Federal Government. The Confederation of Northern Mexican States also had organized a military force with the assistance from the US Military but this had been done to assure that the local police had armed support from a military body. The US Military did not want to remain longer in Northern Mexico than it had to. Already 4 divisions had been withdrawn but the new situtation was causing concern and hesitation to continue the withdrawal

The Mexican government had been trying to rebuild its military which had suffered major damage when going up against the US Military. The Mexicans turned to Germany and France for equipment. It lacked enough cash to go with the latest military hardware. From Germany it bough the older surplus Leopard I A5 tanks and mortars and small arms. From France it purchase AMX10 Infantry fighting Vehicles and jet fighters..

The arrival of the "peacekeepers from Brazil and Neuva Granada helped to separate the two sides in the Mexican Conflict and prevent a Civil War from breaking out

Talks between the Mexican Federal Government and the Confederation of Northern Mexican States reached an point where neither side would budge. The US had slowly been withdrawing forces from the Confederation and only 4 divisions remained from the 16 plus that had invaded. The peacekeepers withdrew from parts of the states that the majority were controlled by the Mexican Federal Government to new positions entirely within the Confederation.. When Mexican Federal forces began to probe the new line the Peacekeepers reminded them that they were not allowed to go north LT General Juan De Vega of the Neuva Granada Army was currently the Commander of the Peacekeepers when the Brazilian General returned to Brazil for talks with the Ministry of Defense.
General De Vega informed the Mexicans that should they cross the boundary they would be fired upon

With the declaration by the government of the Confederation that they no longer wished to be part of Mexico a decision had to be made by the government who supplied the Peacekeepers, the Government of the United States, the Confederation ,Mexico and other nations. Neuva Granada's King extended diplomatic recogination . the Mayan Confederation did the same and the Central American Republic became the third state. Cuba and Argentina said no but Brazil said yes. Canada said it would think on it. France said no. Britain and the US both said yes on the same day.Peru said no.
