Peshawar Lancers Redux: Latin America

The problem is that nations like Germany and Brazil see it as not a means of preventing a war but of limiting their ability to meet future threats as technology is changing. Then one has Argentina which fears domination by Brazil in South America and if they will not join (Brazil) then Argentina wants no part of it. Nations like Sweden and Switzerland lack an ability to allay the fears of some nations. Thus Austria is left trying to find an answer to this.
Latin America seems to be dominated , at least in the southern part by 3 Countries Neuva Granada, Empire of Brazil and Argentina. To the North there is the Central American Republic that seems to be holding together and Mexico. Mexico is recovering from the years of its dictator period which lead to a clash with the United States and eventual intervention By Spain and Neuva Granada. Since then there has been stability and Mexico has broken its seemingly endless slide toward strong men.
Spain finally in 1918 granted independence to Cuba and Puerto Rico thus ending its colonial empire.

Then the admittedly imperfect solution is: diplomacy; international organizations in parallel with military/economic alliances; economic development which strengthens the middle classes and nudges toward greater democracy. However this requires a very long time (some countries are at a worse starting position), and it is likely there will be conflicts before this takes effect.

The end of the effects of the Fall should allow development to resume at a more normal rate.

Brazil's Foreign Ministry was consulting with Britain, Hawaii and the United States on Arms control positions. It was also talking with Neuva Granada and Chile regarding Naval arms. Both Neuva Granada and Chile agreed to regional limits to prevent an arms race. They also agreed to limiting arms sals to Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay. The only problem that the three countries could see was Argentina who refused to make an agreement.

Brigadier General La Pietra arrived in Africa with a small detachment of Brazilian Army Engineers to work on the Commonwealth of Nations Building project. He would be working directly with the Hawaiians on laying out the water and sewer lines.

General La Pietra was put in charge of a key part of the project. He had spoken to the Americans who had started to work on a water filtration plant and was assured that they were on the same page with the plans an American company official was assigned to co-ordinate things.

The Emperor of Brazil donated 5 million dollars toward the Commonwealth of Nations project which allowed the government to reduce its amount to 7 million dollars. The government was facing opposition to spending so much money from the political opposition.

Brigadier General James La Pietra was nominated by the Government of Hawaii to the post of Security Chief for the Commonwealth of Nation. He would also be designated Asst Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations and would oversee the complex. Brazil, Britain, United States, Portugal also supported the Nomination. Karl Thorsen of Sweden was named as the Secretary General and would serve a 4 year term of office and could be re-elected.

The government of Paraguay was overthrown in a coup. The Coupist were belived to be Marxist intent in establishing control if the country and the use of it as a base. The Brazilian Army began to plan for an invasion of the country to restore order and the rule of law to Paraguay. Brazil consulted with Hawaii, Britain and the US as well as Neuva Granada

Operation King's Gambit was launched by the Royal Brazilian armed forces less than 90 days after the coup that took place in Paraguay. B-25s belonging to the Royal Brazilian Air Force struck air field in the country completely destroying the enemy's air force. The Brazilians used P-40 Fighters in support of the invasion. The First Parachute Brigade parachuted into the capital's airfield and secured it. It was reinforced by the 2nd Brigade. The 1st Brigade was fighting the People Militia in a battle for the capital.
Meanwhile the Brazilian II Corp pushed into the country with the 2nd Guards Armored Brigade providing tank support to the 3 infantry divisions.

Argentina began to respond to the Brazilian invasion of Paraguay by moving army units to the border region and calling up reservist. It small air force was placed on alert. Brazilian Intelligence reported the Argentinian actions to the High Command and More Brazilian forces were put on alert. The 1st Armored Brigade together with the 11th Motorized Division moved into Paraguay . Six more divisions moved into the border region with Argentina

Brazil sent a warning to Argentina not to get involved in the Brazilian Operation in Paraguay. It assured the government of Argentina that this operation was aimed only at eliminating the Marxist threat the the restoration of democracy. Brazil noted that the Argentine Air Force had moved 18 German made Me-109B and 18 Italian Made fighter planes to airfield in the east. British Intelligence Informed Brazil that 24 Me-109C fighters ,9 Ju-86 and 5 He-111 aircraft had been sold to Argentina by German firms.

The Brazilian First Parachute Brigade's Battalions now began to push into the Paraguay capital. The sound of rife and Machine gun fire was heard. The Paras used the British designed PIAT to take out the armored vehicles which the opposition had. Gliders brought in the 75mm pack howitzers and the 57mm Antitank guns pulled by jeeps. The roar of B-25s were heard as they came roaring in at a low level. The P-40s also came in at treetop level with guns and bombs. The Paras proved that they were courageous as they risked their lives to prevent civilian loses. The arrival of the Second Parachute Brigade just tipped the balance firmly in favor of the Brazilians. A decision was made to deploy the rest of the division. Fires were burning as the Paras pushed hard to secure all of the objective
The Royal Brazilian Air Force knocked out what artillery the enemy had . It also bombed those enemy units trying to escape.
The First Armored Brigade cleared road blocks and the Mechanized infantry pushed hard to ling up with the paras. When the column came to a destroyed Bridge the Engineers quickly reopened the road while taking fire.

In two weeks the Royal Brazilian Army had secured the country from the Marxist. The use of overwhelming number of troops backed by air power allowed the Brazilians to secure a victory. From that point on it was just a mop up operation. The Brazilians replaced the Paratroopers in the Paraguay capital with a Military Police Brigade, a Battalion of Engineers and other Support forces, The First Airborne Division was gradually returned to Brazil Neuva Granada, Chile and the Central American Republic each volunteered to supply troops to a peace keeping forc so that Brazil could reduce its forces thus easing tensions with Argentina.

General La Pietra was recalled to Brazil from his post at the Commonwealth of Nations and Named as the new Army Chief of Staff in May of 1944.

Brazil removed most of its troops from Paraguay and Neuva Granada and Chile both supplied peace keepers to help maintain order and assist with preventing the reestablishment of a Marxist controlled state. It also helped to ease problems with Argentina. The Commonwealth of Nations approved the Peace Keeping Plan. The goal was to restore control of the country to an elected government in Paraguay by January 1946. Brazil's goal was to have elections by January 1945 in the country.

The sudden passing of the Brazilian Emperor sent the nation into morning. His son John was sworn in as the new Emperor but he ordered a 10 day state of observance to honor the accomplishment of his father.. John had just gotten married and was settling down.

The Empire of Brazil finally had the coronation Of Emperor John I of Brazil . The King of Hawaii and his wife were there as well as the Prince of Wales, Prime Minister of Portugal, King of Spain, Vice President of the United States, the leader of Neuva Granada, President of Chile. Vice President of Chile and Vice President of Central American Republic and the brother of the Austrian Emperor.

Brazil was building a transportation system in the Amazon region that would allow both development of the region and protection of the natural resources. Brazilian Engineers were moving ahead with a project which would allow trade tp move by rail and road to Peru and the Neuva Granada. The Emperor was behind this push.

The Amazon Imperial Highway Project was approved and work began on what would be a 20 year construction project. When completed it would allow a connection with Neuva Granada
