Peshawar Lancers Redux: Kingdom of Hawaii Revised

Prime Minister Shapeway had learned what not to do as another election year was closing in he hoped that it was enough to give him a second term by keeping the party loses down. The shock was that the Social Democrats lost all of their seats in the house and they were all picked up by the National Conservatives. Katherine E Kamehameha campaigned hard for her party and 6 seats were gained by the people that she campaigned for. Thus the party held 249 seats and the Liberal Democrats 250. One seat had yet to be decided. Shapeway offered a government of National Unity. Minority leader Charles F Wright was discussing the matter with the party leadership,

Katherine and her cousin decided against accepting the deal that was offered. They lead 90 members that opposed the deal while only 60 supported it. It was clear that while the rest had not made up their minds enough would join the anti-deal group to give them a majority. Charles resigned as minority leader and Charles nominated his cousin to replace him. Word arrived that the remaining house seat had been won by an independent who refused to vote with the Liberal Democrats.. The Prime Minister formed a government which lasted for 2 months Upon defeat on a key issue he was left with 2 choices attempt to form a government of National unity by offering a lot more or going to the King and calling for a new election. Talks began but soon it was clear that he was not offering enough to get a good deal. The Prime Minister asked the king to disband the house and schedule new elections to take place in 30 days. He would run a caretaker government for those 30 days.
The election was hard fought but Katherine proved that she knew how to run an effective campaign.. The National Conservatives won 312 seats, Liberal Democrats 182 and the Social Democrats got 6. Prime Minister Shapeways went to the Palace and resigned and the King called upon Katherine E Kamehameha to form a government. Her Uncle informed her that he would remain as Secretary of Defense only until she could nominate and confirm a replacement.

Hawaii's first female Prime Minister submitted a whole bunch of names to fill the Cabinet. One of the Nominees was related to the late and Great Prime Minister Bishop. George C Bishop was to be Secretary of State.
Lt Cmdr Tommy McNamara had left the navy and had gone to work for the Kamehameha Foundation he was close to the Prime Minister and was expected to pop the question to Katherine now that he had left the Navy.

Charles F Wright was asked by the Prime Minister to take the post of Secretary of the Interior and he informed the Prime Minister that he would accept and was prepared to resign his seat in the House. Edward Tamara was nominated as Secretary of Defense. He had served in the Royal Hawaiian Navy rising to the rank of Captain and had retired . He had worked in the Ship building and design industry. He held a pilots license to fly twin engine aircraft. He would upon confirmation by the House replace retired Admiral William Kamehameha, who would retire from Public service having served most recently for over 4 years as secretary of Defense. Jacquelyn E Hand was nominated as Attorney General becoming the first female Attorney General of Hawaii.

Tommy McNamara was asked by the Secretary of Defense to become the number two man in the Department. Tommy was perfectly happy working for the foundation but he decided that he would heed his country's call and accept the Post. He believed that it might be temporary as once he was married to the Prime Minister he would resign and return to the foundation

Hawaii's new female Prime Minister had her meeting with President Smith in the Federal Capital of Nashville. The President had just gotten the approval to move the Federal Capital to Kansas City Missouri. The Prime Minister brought with her key advisers on National Defense, Commerce, Foreign Affairs. The discussion resulted in nearly a week's worth of meetings between the two sides. A question of how much Hawaiian investors could own of US Companies was still unresolved. Hawaiians had bought a ship building company in the US that was small but were making heavy investments in it. Hawaii simply did not have the space to built the large ships that the Royal Hawaiian Navy desired but there was land in the US to do so.

Katherine was very much her father's daughter. she had paid attention to what he had done as Prime Minister and could recall grandpa William telling her stories. Thus she had held her own in talks with President Alfred E Smith. They had also after some discussion seen eye to eye in the need to develop weapons that would ensure the security of their nation. The Hawaiians had agrees that Grumman's designs were the best for aircraft for the Naval air arms of both countries.
The Hawaiian_Curtis Aviation company was developing the new passenger aircraft

The Royal Hawaiian Airship Corporation had realized that the days of the airship might very well be coming to an end. The airship was not as fast as the new airplane. Still the corporation was working now with the Germans to see if they could make improvements that might convince enough people to continue to fly on an air ship. Pan Hawaiian Airways had purchased some of the new Douglas passenger planes and was looking at the Curtis C-46. So far he airline had only bought 6 planes but it was already thinking of buying another 30 planes. Pan Hawaiian had operated nearly 130 airships so this was of great concern to the company.
Technology was starting to change.

In the New Year the Kamehameha Family announced the Upcoming marriage of Katherine Elizabeth Kamehameha to Tommy McNamara. The wedding to take place April 12.

The Wedding was regarded by the Public as a state occasion The entire Kamehameha family was there as was the McNamara but the guest included the King and Queen of Hawaii, Governor Theodore Roosevelt II of NY and his wife several members of the house and of the upper chamber, the British Ambassador and the Irish Ambassador.

The Secretary of Defense had a serious talk with Tommy about his plans to resign from his post as Deputy Secretary of Defense. The Secretary did not want him to leave as it would create problems dealing with weapons and personnel but Tommy had felt that it might be a conflict of interest as he would be the husband of the Prime Minister. The Secretary of Defense had a conversation with the Attorney General and the Prime Minister about the issue. The Attorney General said that there was nothing in law that prohibited it. So for the time being he could continue to serve.

The Hawaiian Secretary of State met with the Austrian Emperor to see if a compromise arms proposal might be reached. This might smooth the opposition from Germany and France to some sort of a limit. Hawaii was concern with preventing Naval limits which might endanger sea trade with the rest of the world.

Hawaii's Prime Minister began to discuss the idea of creating an international body as a means of resolving problems before they lead to war. She had gotten the idea from something that her father had said when he was prime Minister. She had the Hawaiian Secretary of State mention the idea to the Austrian Emperor and he seemed to like the idea. The Secretary of State met with the French and British Foreign Ministers and agreed to bring the idea to a cabinet meeting. Hawaii's Prime Minister discussed the idea on phone with the American President and the Canadian Prime Minster.

With the ratification of the Commonwealth of Nations Treaty the Prime Minister asked the Hawaiian House for 1.5million dollars toward Hawaii share of building the new headquarters. France had donated the land and had contributed 3.5million Imperial Napoleons toward the cost. Britain had contributed the equivalent of 3.5 million US dollars and the United States contributed 1.75 million dollars. Austria's Emperor said that the Imperial Family and Austria would contribute 7million US Dollars. Contribution from the other nation combined to reach 10 million dollars

The times were approaching rapidly and Katherine needed to decide whether to run for another term or leave the position at the end of her term. She had just completed a tour of five parts of the Kingdom and had been well received by the people. She had gone to see her doctor and had learned that she was going to have a baby.. This made the decision very important. She spoke with her husband and then her parents. Her father the former Prime Minister knew the pressures of the job and gave her his opinion but said the decision was hers. Her mother was inclined to tell her it was time to go but knew that she loved the job much as her father had. She decided to run but would rely on the cabinet and her deputy Prime Minister to do the traveling.
