Peshawar Lancers Redux: Kingdom of Hawaii Revised

Hawaiian Companies became involved in Neuva Granada in the last decade of the 19th Century when the acquired drilling rights for oil in the country. In addition Hawaiian companies helped to start the digging of a canal in Panama thus compeiting with the Hawaiian Governments project in the Central American Republic

The Royal Hawaiian Navy provided personnel to man a ship that with scientist from the University of Hawaii would begin to explore the lost lands. The first efforts were along the Pacific coast of Canada and Alaska. Gathering data. But in 1892 the effort shifted to the Atlantic and Europe.

 

The project of checking on the status of Europe saw the Hawaiian Vessel pay a visit to Iceland, Ireland, British Isles, Norway, France and Portugal. The visit to Portugal resulted in talks between the government of Hawaii and the Government of Brazil to begin an effort to rebuild Portugal. Hawaii established an airship base in the Azores.

The Hawaiian ship found a considerable population on Iceland. It would seem that the volcano in Iceland provided a deterrence to the advance of the Ice sheeting anywhere near Iceland. The Hawaiians provided food and medicine as well as tool and were able to relay messages to Hawaii viva Fort Louisburg. Also discovered was a limited population in the British Isles and a larger on in Ireland. Doctors on board the ship provided medical care and tools to the struggling Irish population. The Hawaiian vessel made plans to return to Ireland the following year and so began the involvement of Hawaii in the reconstruction of Ireland.

 

Hawaii was going over its budget in the House and there was a serious discussion over the Military budget/ the Military chiefs were looking at modernization of the Navy and the expenditure of money on airships. The Liberal Reform Party objected to the expenditure of so much money. The Navy pointed out that ships were wearing out and newer technology required new vessels. The Navy desired to switch from coal to oil as it would be clearer and this easier to refuel ships. The army was looking at a new battle rifle and a lighter weight field artillery piece.

The Honorable member of the House rose to answer the attacks of the Liberal Reform Party on the Military budget. Rep William Kamehameha was the man most likely to run for Prime Minister in the next election,He began his speech by pointing out that the Kingdom had had to build a navy out of the materials that it had available at the time. Some of those ships were ill suited to Naval use and others had been worn out carrying out missions to secure the safety of a nation. Now when there was a chance to correct those wrong the government proposed to begin replacing the vessels. The nation had an obligation to those who wore the uniform to provide them with the tools needed to safely allow them to do their job. The government had looked at what needed to be spent and what could be afforded to spend.. Unfortunately we live in a world that requires the use of force. If a ship is at sea and suffers damage from whatever the cause the sailors on it ask where is the Navy, who will come and save us.

 

William Kamehameha was well prepared to take up the mantle of Prime Minister of Hawaii. He had served as Charles Bishops right hand man for the last 6 years.

With a new election set for early 1896 Prime Minister Charles Bishop resigned the Post of Prime Minister allowing William Kamehameha to take up the post. Hawaii's former Prime Minister was named as Hawaii's Envoy to the British Empire. He was expected to retain the post for 2 years and then was expected to hold the post of Ambassador to the United States.

 

William Kamehameha wanted to settle some issues before he ran for election . Having taken over the post of Prime Minister before the next election gave him a chance to push ahead with some of his foreign Policy and trade policy.. He expected to meet with the British Prime Minister in Hawaii another signal of the desire to retain close ties between the two allies.

The New Prime Minister's trip to Latin America resulted in some important decisions to be reached. In Brazil the leaders of the two nations reached agreements on trade and on Portugal's reconstruction. Brazil assured Hawaii that it would stand with it and Britain over the Falklands. Next a trip to Neuva Granada resulted in a major trade agreement over oil drilling and the Panama Canal. It also cleared up the Joint Spanish-Neuva Granada occupation of Mexico and the plans that the two nations had for establishing a stable Mexico.

 

The Governments of Hawaii and the Central American Republic announced the Opening of the American Canal in the summer of 1896. Now Hawaii would be able to trade with a lot of the world more Directly.

Prime Minister Kamehameha met with the US President on the island of Catalina. They met at one of the former Hawaiian Naval bases that had been returned to the US 5 years ago. People were beginning to resettle the island.. Talks were regarding the world situation and on trade. Among the topics discussed was Mexico. The Hawaiians reassured the President that Spain would be reducing its forces in the country and planned for new elections and a restoration of independence.

 

The Prime Minister was attempting to balance the needs of the Hawaiian people with those of the Military. He was also trying very hard to meet what he felt was Hawaii's responsibility to help in the restoration of the world. There was only so much that his country could do. Yet Hawaii was trying to be a country that could help to avoid another war.
