Pennsylvania Avenue Opened

-We will reopen Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House as a symbolic expression of our confidence in the restoration of the rule of law.
2000 Republican Platform

What if, as his first act of office, George W. Bush opened Pennsylvania Avenue to vehicular traffic. Of course this would be pre-9/11 but what would you think would happen for the time being (Jan 20th - Sept 10th 2001) and about after 9/11...

I doubt if it will ever be reopened - Remembre in 1941 They put a TEMPORARY fence around the White House as a War Time Security Measure.

In all fairness the the US Goverment, in an age of suicide car bombs keeping an open street by the residence of the Great Satan himself would be beyond stupid

it'd have to be one hell of a bomb, the White House isn't really on the street, it's a few yards back from the street with a 8 foot iron fence around the property

Well I think that there would be no serious threat perceived by the Republican party, although I feel that opening Pennsylvania avenue to traffic would be more likely under McCain than Bush...
