Pearl: A look at Janis Joplin. (A Janis Joplin Lives TL)

"She goes barefooted when she feels like it, wears Levis to class because they're more comfortable, and carries her Autoharp with her everywhere she goes so that in case she gets the urge to break into song, it will be handy. Her name is Janis Joplin."

Janis Joplin, at her 70th birthday celebration at her home in Los Angeles, read an article about herself from her college newspaper, surrounded by friends and family.

"That was uh... June 1962... Geez, fifty years, wow I feel ancient." There was laughter throughout the room. "Seriously though, the way I see it, I think my life has been in two parts. Before that day in October 1970, and after.

Aftermath October 5th 1970 to February 1971

On October 5th 1970, Janis Joplin lay in a coma since an accidental heroin overdose since the day before. Her band mates and her road manager waited patiently at Cedar Sinai Medical Center. Janis slowly began to open her eyes.

"It was the strangest thing... I remember it being pitch black, it was kinda' calming actually, and then BANG! it was this bright white light... and that's when I woke up." - on The Oprah Winfrey Show, 1997

"I feel like shit," Janis said bluntly. "Janis, you had an overdose... you were in a coma," her band mate, John Till said, trying his best to keep her from lashing out. Janis tried to reach out to hold his hand, but she could barely lift her arm up.

She was weak, and would require weeks of rehab for her to recover. It was decided her newest album, Pearl, would be released with what had been recorded, it was also decided she would stay out of the spotlight for at least a couple of months.

When Janis learned that her fiancée, Seth Morgan had abandoned her in response to the near fatal overdose, she had a nervous breakdown, giving her even further reason to check herself in to a facility on November 1st.

Throughout the music community, it was an open secret that she was in rehab, however the media didn't know. During the winter, magazine articles asked; Where's Janis?

An interesting premise, and one that could have implications for other artists; I believe Marty Balin quit Jefferson Airplane because Joplin's death left him disillusioned about music.

Yes, definetly. I have an idea where Janis records an album with a certain someone named Paul, also Janis will definetly experiment with more genres of music, returning to her roots in Texas. She'll be a major player with southern rock.
