Around 1994 the EZLN, or Zapatista National Liberation Army, a group of Leftist militants in the poor southern agrarian state of Chiapas declared "war on the government of Mexico," according to their spokesman, Subcommandante Marcos.
Behind a skimask and smoking a pipe, he formed an air of mystique that captured many hearts and minds throught the province and in some Leftist circles around the world that were willing to send funds to aid their uprising.

The Zapatistas, as they were called, took their name from Emilio Zapata. He was another agrarian revolutionary of Mexican history, though farther north. When the Zapatistas rose up in revolt, their militia forces captured four towns in the province, as well as a number of ranches and haciendas.
The Mexican air force and army began counterinsurgency operations and bottled them up in the mountains, but to this day have been unable or unwilling to oust them from the towns they hold.
The EZLN has switched from militant behaviour to a more peaceful stance, building health centers and schools in their so-called "liberated zone" in Chiapas. They function as an autonomous region, though Mexico still asserts that the area is under the control of the Mexican government.

So, an odd thought popped into my head...there's been a lot of talk about US troops going to different places. And in the 1990s, peacekeeping was the new black. It went with everything.
Had the conflict in Chiapas somehow gotten out of hand to the point where people were getting killed on a level of publicity or scale of death like that in Bosnia or Kosovo, then there may have been an outcry by the international public to do something.
The Clinton Administration absolutely loved sending peacekeeping troops places. And one thing that it was never shy about doing was invading tropical countries in the Carribbean. (Haiti, anyone? Twice?)

So I suppose my challenge/thought is, could there have ever been a circumstance arising from the uprising in Chiapas and subsequent war against the EZLN that called for UN intervention, in your opinion?
