PC/WI: "The Riddle of the Sands" German invasion of the UK?

In the book and film "The Riddle of the Sands, two British sailors uncover a German plot to attack the Royal Navy's Chatham docks to take out a portion of the RN's fleet and then transfer 100,000 soldiers to the UK via barges into The Wash as prelude to invading the UK.

How plausible would this plan be?

Would it work?

Regards filers

"Invasion literature" was a staple of the period from 1870 to 1914 (starting with The Battle of Dorking) reflecting the fears of new technology making a sudden invasion practical. This genre included the "scareships" and the various spy panics.

Here's an anthology of them, The Battle of Dorking and Other Invasion Stories, 1871-1914. It includes besides the title novel, The War of the Worlds, The Riddle of the Sands, the science-fictional The Angel of the Revolution, and the satiric takedown of them all, P. G. Wodehouse's The Swoop!

It's a good collection.
One of Glen Petrie's Mycroft Holmes books is set in the period immediately after the Franco-Prussian War and the publication of The Battle of Dorking (which is inspired by a fictional plan that Holmes defeats).
