Charles Joseph Bonaparte was the Baltimore-born grandnephew of the man who sold the United States the Territory of Louisiana. A Roman Catholic and a Republican, he graduated from Harvard and was involved in various municipal and national reform movements. He was appointed Secretary of the Navy and Attorney General once Theodore Roosevelt began his second term. As Attorney General, he pursued the tobacco monopoly and became known as "Charlie, the Crook Chaser" for his efforts. In 1908, he established a Bureau of Investigation, a precursor to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Is it plausible that this man, born and bred-American, could become President? Say, 1908, no Taft running and the path to the nomination cleared by him by Roosevelt? Would 1908 America be willing to elect a Catholic, even a Republican; one as popular and backed by TR? How would France, and by extension all of Europe, react to the election of the grandson of the King of Westphalia to the American Presidency?
