IOTL, the Battle of Fontenoy (841 AD) pitted the forces of Lothair I (and his ally, Pepin II of Aquitaine) against Charles, the Bald, and Louis, the German. Lothair intended to inherit the whole of the Carolingian/Holy Roman Empire for himself, while Charles and Louis intended to divide the empire. As we know it, Charles and Louis won the battle, and forced Lothair to accept the Treaty of Verdun in 843, dividing the empire in three, roughly equal portions. Two of them would go on to form the backbone of modern France and Germany.
But what if Lothair had managed to defeat Charles and Louis, ascend to the imperial throne, keep the empire united, and estabilish a system of primogeniture?
