Recently I have been reading Michael Pye's 'The Edge of the World' in which he says that during the 7th Century the church in Rome had a dispute with the church in Ireland over a number of points including, but not limited to, the dating of Easter. He describes how, largely due to Bede's work on dating and time at the time, this problem of dating Easter was largely solved. What I'm asking is:
Would it be possible to cause these problems to spill over and create an actual schism within the Catholic Church between the Irish and Roman Churches?
Secondly, if this were to happen, what would be the likely effects of this schism on Ireland, Europe and the church?
