PC/WI: Irish Schism?

Recently I have been reading Michael Pye's 'The Edge of the World' in which he says that during the 7th Century the church in Rome had a dispute with the church in Ireland over a number of points including, but not limited to, the dating of Easter. He describes how, largely due to Bede's work on dating and time at the time, this problem of dating Easter was largely solved. What I'm asking is:

Would it be possible to cause these problems to spill over and create an actual schism within the Catholic Church between the Irish and Roman Churches?

Secondly, if this were to happen, what would be the likely effects of this schism on Ireland, Europe and the church?

Well due to the immense distance, Rome was virtually powerless over the Irish church and so you could see it as a de facto schism.
This was more or less the status quo until the Norman Conquest of Ireland.
What you need is to have this schism maintained and to become a matter of law.

Okay so how might this happen?

Simplest way is a English victory at Hastings but that is arguably the easiest way.
Honestly I cannot go much further with this due to lack of knowledge.
Maybe it can hold out in areas such as Connacht of which remained fully Irish for centuries until Cromwell.
Have large collection of churches remain independent in the region and spilt of during the Protestant Reformation.
Certainly then Irish could become the language of religion in the region.

I don't think it would be all that likely, despite some cultural and ecclesiastical differences the split between the Irish church and the church in Rome was never large enough to justify a full schism. The differences between East and West were much larger and more apparent, and even the Byzantine and Roman churches didn't schism completely until the 11th century. After centuries of slowly drifting apart, not even the issue of Patriarchal primacy could split the Chalcedonian church until the 1000s.
